French label Carlotta Films has revealed that it plans to add a number of classic films to its Blu-ray catalog between October and November. Amongst them are Japanese master Yasujirô Ozu's newly restored
The Only Son (1936) and
Tokyo Story (1953), Michael Powell's
49th Parallel (1941), and Brian De Palma's
The Fury (1978).
Exact technical specs and supplemental features to be included with these upcoming releases have not yet been revealed.
Twilight's Last Gleaming
A renegade USAF general, Lawrence Dell, escapes from a military prison and takes over an ICBM silo near Montana and threatens to provoke World War 3 unless the President revels details of a secret meeting held just after the start of the Vietnam War between Dell and the then President's most trusted advisers. Directed by Robert Aldrich, and starring Burt Lancaster, Roscoe Lee Browne, Joseph Cotten, and Richard Widmark. Coming in November.
49th Parallel
Laurence Olivier and Leslie Howard are among the stars who try to prevent Nazi sailors, from a sunken U-Boat, reaching neutral USA through Canada in this classic war film, which was intended to persuade America to join World War II. Emeric Pressburger won an Academy Award for the story and the film was directed by Michael Powell. Also starring Finlay Currie, Raymond Massey, Glynis Johns, Raymond Lovell, and Niall MacGinnis. Coming in November.
Kiss Me Deadly
Robert Aldrich's brutal film-noir featuring Mickey Spillane's infamous private eye Mike Hammer. Stopping to pick up a semi-naked woman running down the highway, Mike (Meeker) wakes up to find the woman dead and himself in deep trouble. The FBI tell Mike to leave it alone, so he does just the opposite, beating and bullying his way into the conspiracy which surrounds a criminal group's efforts to reclaim a mysterious black container. Starring Ralph Meeker, Albert Dekker, and Paul Stewart. Coming in November.
The Fury
Kirk Douglas plays Peter Sandza, a Secret Service agent whose son Robin has psychic powers. Whilst holidaying with Robin and fellow agent Childress they are attacked by what seems to be a gang of terrorists and Robin is kidnapped. However, when Sandzer discovers that the attack was masterminded by Childress, who wants to corrupt and then sell Robin's powers, he enlists the help of another psychic to track his son down - but will they be too late? Directed by Brian De Palma. Also starring John Cassavetes, Carrie Snodgress, Andrew Stevens, and Amy Irving. Coming in October.
Tokyo Story
Widely regarded as Yasujiro Ozu's masterpiece, this early 1950s Japanese drama is a tender meditation on ageing, mortality and inter-generational tensions. When an elderly couple, Tomi and Shukishi (Chieko Higashiyama and Chishu Ryu), travel from their rural village home to Tokyo to visit their married son and daughter, their reception is disappointing. Met with selfish indifference and impatience by their children and their grandchildren, they are soon packed off to a health spa - but when Tomi falls ill, her descendants are forced to re-evaluate their priorities. Coming in October.
