Blu-ray Sales, June 24-30: The Giant Slayer Stays at the Top of the HD Chart

For the week that ended on June 30th, Warner Bros' Jack the Giant Slayer remained at the top of the Blu-ray-only rankings. The fairy-tale-adventure has now enjoyed two weeks of strong home media sales, and this performance comes as a corrective to its disappointing theatrical run last March; Jack the Giant Slayer cost an estimated $195 million to produce, but it grossed only $197 million worldwide and mustered a Metacritic score of 51%. This past week, director Bryan Singer's feature had a Blu-ray market share of 39%.

Next up on the Blu-ray-only list was last week's number-two placeholder, the Wizard of Oz prequel Oz the Great and Powerful. Director Sam Raimi's family-fantasy has found healthy earnings both on the home media market and at the box office; despite its mediocre critical notices - a 44% Metacritic score - Oz the Great and Powerful made almost $500 million worldwide on top of its $215 million budget. The picture sold 95% as many Blu-rays as Jack the Giant Slayer and had a Blu-ray market share of 37%. On the overall package media list, it moved 77% as many total units as the top title.

Finally, Sony's The Call closed out the third spot on the Blu-ray-only rankings. This intense thriller - directed by Vanishing on 7th Street and frequent Fringe helmer Brad Anderson - was somewhat of a surprise hit for the studio in March. While it grossed almost $52 million domestically, it did so off a modest production budget of just $13 million. The Call sold 87% as many Blu-rays as Jack the Giant Slayer and had an HD market share of 26%. When taking into consideration overall package media, the film performed even better, beating Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz the Great and Powerful to take the number one spot; on that chart, Jack the Giant Slayer sold 79% as many total units as it.
