Blu-ray Sales, June 17-23: Jack the Giant Slayer Journeys to Number One

For the week that ended on June 23rd, Warner Bros' Jack the Giant Slayer took the number one spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall media rankings. Director Bryan Singer's adventure was considered a disappointment after its theatrical release last March. The film, which accrued an estimated production budget of $195 million, grossed only $65 million domestically (and $132 million internationally, bringing its cumulative total to just $197 million) and did not do much better with critics; its Metacritic score topped out at 51%. However, this small-screen success suggests a potential second life on home media, where Jack the Giant Slayer came out on top and had a Blu-ray market share of 43%.

Next up on the overall package media and Blu-ray-only lists was last week's winner, the Wizard of Oz prequel Oz the Great and Powerful. Director Sam Raimi (Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn), steered this blockbuster fantasy to healthy box office earnings; its mediocre critical notices - a 44% Metacritic score - did not prevent the film from making almost $500 million worldwide on top of its $215 million budget. Oz the Great and Powerful sold 64% as many Blu-rays as Jack the Giant Slayer and had a Blu-ray market share of 38%, and on the overall package media list, it performed even stronger, moving 73% as many total units as Singer's fairy-tale-reimagining.

Finally, Paramount's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters closed out the third spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. Like Jack the Giant Slayer, the picture is an update of a popular children's fable, albeit a far bloodier one. This violent horror-comedy overcame poor reviews (its Metacritic score is 21%) to connect with audiences last winter; the $50-million movie made over $225 million worldwide. Hansel & Gretel sold 39% as many Blu-rays as Jack the Giant Slayer and had an HD market share of 41%, and it sold 41% as many total units as Jack the Giant Slayer.
