Blu-ray Sales, May 13-19: Cloud Atlas Transcends the Top Sales Figures

For the week that ended on May 19th, Warner Home Entertainment's Cloud Atlas debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media lists. An ambitious, star-studded interpretation of David Mitchell's landmark postmodern text, the film struggled to connect with critics and audiences after its premiere last October - Cloud Atlas scored a 55% Metacritic score and grossed only $27 million domestically on top of a projected $102 million production budget. Still, the film managed an impressive home media debut, garnering a Blu-ray market share of 44% and handily beating the other releases on the different home media platforms.

Coming in at number two on the Blu-ray-only and overall media rankings was last week's second-place occupant: Twentieth Century Fox's Safe Haven. The Josh Duhamel/Julianne Hough romantic thriller - which director Lasse Hallström adapted from Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel - received lukewarm reviews (it has generated a Metacritic score of 34%) and a strong commercial take; the $28 million picture netted over $71 million domestically. Safe Haven had a Blu-ray market share of 30%, and it sold 49% as many HD units as Cloud Atlas and 74% as many total units.

Finally, Paramount Pictures' Jack Reacher took the third spot on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media lists. The action-thriller - the first in a new franchise for Tom Cruise - has scored a 50% Metacritic figure and a worldwide box-office gross of over $216 million since its theatrical debut last December. Last week, Jack Reacher drew a Blu-ray market share of 40% and sold 48% as many Blu-rays as Cloud Atlas; on the overall home media chart, the film moved 53% as many total units as the science-fiction epic.
