Blu-ray Sales, April 22-28: Django Unchained Stays at Number One

For the week that ended on April 28th, more adult fare dominated the home media sales charts. Case in point: Anchor Bay and the Weinstein Company's Django Unchained remained at number one on the Blu-ray and overall package media lists. This violent, darkly comic Western brought director Quentin Tarantino widespread acclaim after it premiered theatrically, earning over $420 million worldwide and receiving five Oscar nominations - it went on to win two, one for Tarantino's original script and one for Christoph Waltz's performance as Dr. King Schultz. During this past week of sales, Django Unchained drew a Blu-ray market share of 49%.

Coming in at number two on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media rankings was Warner Bros' Gangster Squad, which received more attention for its violent content in the wake of the Aurora massacre than for anything else pertaining to the film; it mustered a 40% Metacritic score and grossed only $46 million domestically (on top of a projected $60 million production budget). Still, the film managed a solid home media debut, garnering a Blu-ray market share of 42% and selling 74% as many Blu-rays as Django and 86% as many total units.

Finally, Universal Studios' A Haunted House rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. This scary-movie spoof - the brainchild of, not coincidentally, Marlon Wayans, one of the chief architects of the first two Scary Movie features - made a healthy profit when it opened in January, grossing $40 million off a paltry $2.5 million production budget. A Haunted House sold 33% as many Blu-rays as Django Unchained and had a 37% HD market share, and it moved 43% as many total units as the Tarantino epic.
