Django Unchained took the top spot on the Blu-ray and overall package media lists. Director Quentin Tarantino's profanely comic adventure is one of his most successful features; it made over $420 million worldwide and received five Oscar nominations, winning two for Tarantino's original script and for Christoph Waltz's performance as Dr. King Schultz. As the figures below demonstrate,
Django Unchained dominated consumer interest last week - no other title sold near as many copies as it did, and it managed a solid Blu-ray market share of 54%.
At number two on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media rankings was Warner Bros. and New Line Home Entertainment's
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The film has been a fixture in the top five sales positions since its small-screen debut last month, and all after grossing over $1 billion theatrically. Director Peter Jackson's prequel to his Academy Award-winning
Lord of the Rings Trilogy had a Blu-ray market share of 26% and sold 8% as many Blu-rays as
Django and 17% as many total units.
Finally, Disney and Touchstone Home Entertainment's
Lincoln rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. Director Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning drama about U.S. President Abraham Lincoln garnered both critical and commercial accolades last year, grossing over $263 million worldwide and winning Oscars for star Daniel Day-Lewis and for production designers Rick Carter and Jim Erickson.
Lincoln sold 6% as many Blu-rays as
Django, and it had an HD market share of 34%. On the overall package media chart, the historical biopic moved 9% as many total units as Tarantino's violent Western.
