Blu-ray Sales, April 8-14: The Hobbit Journeys Back to the Top

For the week that ended on April 14th, Warner Bros. and New Line Home Entertainment's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey took the top spot on the Blu-ray and overall package lists. The film, which has been a fixture in the top five sales positions since its small-screen debut last month, actually rose from number three to win the highest sales totals. Director Peter Jackson's prequel to his Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings Trilogy has made more than $1 billion worldwide; last week, The Hobbit had a Blu-ray market share of 43%.

At number two on the Blu-ray-only rankings was Disney and Touchstone Home Entertainment's Lincoln. Director Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning drama about U.S. President Abraham Lincoln garnered both critical and commercial accolades last year, winning Oscars for star Daniel Day-Lewis and for production designers Rick Carter and Jim Erickson and grossing over $263 million worldwide. Lincoln sold 73% as many Blu-rays as The Hobbit, and it had an HD market share of 36%. On the overall package media chart, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's The Bible followed The Hobbit, generating a 25% HD market share and selling 92% as many total units as Peter Jackson's fantasy adventure.

Finally, Universal Studios Home Entertainment's Les Misérables rounded out the top three on the Blu-ray-only charts. Director Tom Hooper's Academy Award-winning follow-up to his The King's Speech grossed over $432 million top on of its estimated $61 million budget, and it sold 60% as many Blu-rays as The Hobbit and had a Blu-ray market share of 40%. Lincoln replaced Les Misérables on the overall package media list, selling 88% as many units as The Hobbit.
