Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures announced earlier today that it has teamed up China Movie Channel, a state-run company, to produce Transformers 4 in China. The film is expected to be released in China and in the United States in June of 2014.
According to China Movie Channel, the deal marks the first time a major western studio will produce a film in China.
The Transformers films have performed exceptionally well in China. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon, for example, grossed $165 million.
The biggest western hit to date, however, is James Cameron's megablockbuster Avatar, which was released in China in January 2010 and grossed $221.9 million.
Transformers 4 will be directed by Michael Bay. Mark Wahlberg will play one of the main characters in the film.
