For the week that ended on March 17th, family fare dominated the home media market. DreamWorks Home Entertainment's
Rise of the Guardians scored the top position on the Blu-ray and overall package lists. This CGI-adventure - the brainchild of author William Joyce and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro - did not perform as strongly as the studio might have hoped when it premiered last November; it grossed only $103 million domestically, despite an estimated production budget of $145 million. Nevertheless, it still make a solid small-screen debut, where it had a Blu-ray market share of 44%.
At the number two spot on the overall package media and Blu-ray-only rankings was Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's release of
Life of Pi. Director Ang Lee's visually stunning adaptation of the Yann Martel novel found great success among audiences and critics; in addition to a worldwide gross of over $603 million, the picture also won four Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects and Best Director. On the Blu-ray chart,
Life of Pi sold 74% as many discs as
Rise of the Guardians and garnered an HD market share of 47%. When taking into consideration the overall home media rankings,
Life of Pi sold 69% as many total units as the DreamWorks adventure.
Finally, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Wreck-It Ralph rounded out the top three positions on the Blu-ray and overall package media lists. This
critically acclaimed animated comedy grossed over $436 million worldwide after it premiered theatrically last November, and it continues to perform well on home media. The film sold 39% as many Blu-rays as
