Blu-ray Sales, February 18-24: Skyfall and Argo Take Top Spots

For the week that ended on February 24th, MGM and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's release of Skyfall again topped the Blu-ray media rankings. The film, which grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide when it premiered theatrically last November, continued to succeed on the home media market, where it garnered a healthy HD market share of 53%.

Following Skyfall on the Blu-ray rankings was HBO Home Entertainment's Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season box set. This critically and commercially successful fantasy drama begins its third season in just a few weeks and as such, fans eagerly picked up copies of its sophomore year. HBO's Game of Thrones package had a Blu-ray market share of 61% and almost overtook Skyfall; it sold 99% as many Blu-rays as the James Bond adventure. On the overall package media list, the series came in at third place and sold 71% as many copies as the top seller.

However, the third place rankings got a little convoluted. On the Blu-ray-only list, Argo rounded out the top three. The film, which just won three Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture, grossed over $207 million worldwide on top of its $44 million production budget, and its small-screen debut in the top three certainly bodes well for its future. It sold 97% as many Blu-rays as Skyfall and had a 43% HD market share. When taking into account all package media, though, Argo actually outpaced Skyfall, coming in at number one; there, Skyfall took the second place spot and sold 83% as many total units as Argo.
