For the week that ended on February 17th, MGM and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment's release of
Skyfall topped both the Blu-ray and overall package media charts. The film scored similarly well in theaters last November; to date, the estimated $200 million blockbuster has grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, with over $303 million of that coming from its domestic totals. For its home media debut, not only did
Skyfall debut at number one, but it also garnered a healthy HD market share of 63%.
Skyfall dominated sales; no other titles even came close to it. In second place on the Blu-ray-only chart was Disney's
Peter Pan, and it only sold 12% as many Blu-rays as
Skyfall (
Hotel Transylvania came in second on the overall package media chart, and it only managed to sell 20% as many copies as the James Bond thriller). Still,
Peter Pan's continued presence in the top five on the home media charts has served Disney well and speaks towards viewer interest in the studio's HD upgrades - since the animated classic made its Blu-ray-exclusive premiere two weeks ago, its HD market share is 100%.
Finally, coming in at number three on the Blu-ray rankings was Sony Pictures Entertainment's
Hotel Transylvania. This CGI comedy - a collaboration between
Happy Gilmore funnyman Adam Sandler and
Dexter's Laboratory and
Powerpuff Girls architect Genndy Tartakovsky - took in a domestic box-office haul of $148 million on top of its estimated $85 million production budget when it premiered theatrically last September. This past week, its Blu-ray market share was 29%, and it sold 9% as many HD units as
Skyfall.
