Blu-ray Sales, November 26-December 2: Men in Black 3 Neuralizes Brave

During the week that ended on December 2nd, Sony Pictures' Men in Black 3 topped the Blu-ray-only media charts. Director Barry Sonnenfeld's third installment in the popular sci-fi comedy franchise franchise made a huge sales impression in just a few days; it streeted on Friday, November 30th as opposed to Tuesday the 27th, and still it managed to top the Blu-ray chart. The film also enjoyed a strong initial showing on the 3D Blu-ray chart - 12% of its total numbers came from 3D. These totals bode well for Men in Black 3's small-screen future, as does its solid HD market share of 59%.

Just behind Men in Black 3 on the Blu-ray ranks was Disney's Brave. After two weeks, the animated adventure finally conceded the top spot to another feature, though it still managed to sell a large amount of Blu-ray units - 98% as many copies as Men in Black 3 - and to score a 47% HD market share. In fact, when taking into consideration overall package media copies, Brave actually held on the number one sales position, besting even Men in Black 3. On that chart, Men in Black 3 sold 82% as many total units as the Pixar feature.

Finally, another animated feature - Universal Studios' ParaNorman - rounded out the last of the top three spots on the Blu-ray-only list. ParaNorman had a slightly disappointing box-office showing when it premiered theatrically last August; it grossed over $55 million domestically on top of its $60 million production budget. However, its high debut position on home media compensates somewhat for its theatrical performance, particularly if the feature continues to linger on the package media charts in the weeks to come. ParaNorman had a Blu-ray market share of 46%, and it sold 50% as many Blu-rays as Men in Black 3.
