Danny Trejo is one of the more unlikely stars in recent film history. With a troubled past which included stints in prison and a history of substance abuse, and certainly an appearance that few would characterize as being one of typical “movie star” good looks, Trejo has carved out a rather remarkable career that has typically seen him portraying hardscrabble characters who are often a little scary on the outside but who nonetheless have some inherent aspect of morality. That’s certainly the case in what amounts to little more than a glorified in Zombie Hunter, a 2013 outing that sees Trejo has a priest named Jésus who has shepherded a small bunch of human survivors through a zombie apocalypse (or post- apocalypse, as the case may be), but who has a mean streak when it comes to taking out a mutant beast or two.
Zombie Hunter is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Well Go USA with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer. The bulk of this enterprise is a typically sharp looking digitally shot feature, but fine detail suffers somewhat from several heavily color graded elements, including some red laden flashback sequences and at least one blue swathed attack scene. Some of the special effects are quite effective, but the CGI monsters aren't sharp or detailed enough to really make a strong impression.
Zombie Hunter's lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix is a relentlessly boisterous affair, with tons of LFE and some nice immersion, including great panning sounds as the hunter drives his souped up car through the wilderness and, later, the requisite shootouts with the zombie hordes. Dialogue is cleanly presented with excellent fidelity. Dynamic range is extremely wide in this feature.
Aside from some especially nasty looking mutants which aren't typical zombie movie fare (think monster movie instead), Zombie Hunter is a pretty rote, predictable enterprise. There's probably enough action and grittiness here for genre completists, but others may want to stick to more familiar fare like the Romero films. Just be aware that despite his billing on the cover, Trejo's part is rather limited.
