A prequel series to the mega-hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon focuses on the origin story of a young Sheldon Cooper as he grows up in TX (alongside his family). The series takes a different turn from the original series and becomes its own thing while giving some nice nods to established fans of the Big Bang Theory universe. Featuring series narration by Jim Parsons, who reprises his role as Sheldon, the family-friendly comedy-drama is a must see series that finds even firmer footing in the second season outing.
Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) is navigating life one science experiment at a time as his genius brain outgrows his body. Cooper is still learning all about life and its myriad of mysteries as he grows up in a little Texas town (where a game of Texas football takes more precedence than his scientific quests). No bother. He might not fit in perfectly but he has a family that loves him deeply despite their differences. (No bazinga, there.)
Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry) is Sheldon's adorning mom: Mary is involved in the nearby Church as she finds work at the Church a part of her own life journey. George Cooper (Lance Barber), high-school football teacher, beer-drinker, and go-get-er attempts to navigate his role as father to the boy genius (as best he can). Sheldon is also joined by two (very different) siblings: his girl-obsessed older brother, Georgie Cooper (Montana Jordan) and his younger sister, the smart-aleck Missy Cooper (Raegan Revord).
Connie 'Meemaw' Tucker (Annie Potts) also takes on an important role in Sheldon's life as she aids Mary in guiding the young boy through a myriad of his day-to-day issues. Dr. John Sturgis (Wallace Shawn) also enters Sheldon's life – acting as an inspiration (proving a scientific-mind for him to look up to) and becoming romantically entangled with Connie. Meanwhile, Sheldon finds moments of fun and fancy-free with his best-friend Tam (Ryan Phuong): science, comic books, and lunch are talking points.
"Watch this series! You hear me?!"
The second season tackles some great concepts involving Sheldon Cooper: he runs for class president as the one and only opposition, he dismantles a refrigerator as a experiment (but doesn't know how to put it back together), he becomes part of a test study comparing his brains to that of his younger sister, he gets a prodigy rival/friend, Paige (Mckenna Grace), he learns how to play video games for the first time, and he boycotts his favorite bread company when they start using cheaper ingredients. These are just some of the great ideas the second season explores.
Overall, Young Sheldon found its voice in season two and this run of episodes manages to outshine the debut season of the series. The production has improved significantly over the course of its run to date. The early episodes of the series were a disappointment at first: I initially found myself disappointed in the prequel to The Big Bang Theory. Was Young Sheldon merely a cash-in? I had my doubts about the production.
The series has aged like a fine wine. The second season is much more engaging and the characters are better developed. The series is no longer just about Sheldon, either. There are plenty of moments that allow the supporting cast to shine. These comedy improves and the series became funnier: as if the writers and cast grew more confident. Annie Potts is particularly impressive in her role as Meemaw. Wallace Shawn is also the best addition to the series since the pilot: Dr. John Sturgis is one of the most entertaining characters on the show.
Though the series seems aimed at a unique segment of the audience that The Big Bang Theory appeals to (as Young Sheldon is a family-friendly series first and foremost) there are enough easter-eggs and tie-in episodes to make it a worthwhile watch for any fans of The Big Bang Theory. What started out as an average television series has grown into a surprisingly great series that has a good time expanding on the story of Sheldon Cooper while telling its own story. Don't overlook it.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Warner Bros, Young Sheldon: Season 2 has received a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition presentation in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The series looks altogether impressive on this high quality Blu-ray release. The digital photography looks detailed while remaining crisp and clear throughout each episode. Colors are vibrant throughout and show a good amount of depth. Each episode looks pristine and the encoding quality is a nice match for the visuals: there are no issues to report with regards to compression artifacts and the overall quality of the encoding.
The sound quality on the release is exceptional. The set includes a crystal clear DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound track. First are foremost, dialogue reproduction on the release is top-notch from the first episode to the very last. There really is something magnificent about the lossless audio: it truly shines.
Young Sheldon is a comedy-drama and as such there isn't as much going on with regards to surround sound: viewers should expect there to be no big explosive action-packed moments. However, in regards to overall surround sound expansiveness, the surrounds do add some nice ambiance which adds to the viewing experience. There are subtle elements that are utilized (such as the music soundtrack). Fans will certainly be pleased by the exceptional level of clarity and overall fidelity present on the set.
Optional English SDH subtitles (for the deaf and hard of hearing) are provided.
There are no bonus features to speak of on the release. Bazinga! Kiddin', there really aren't any extras here. Double bazinga?
The second season of Young Sheldon is a home-run success. The series has grown exponentially since the first season outing and the series is all the more entertaining during its sophomore season. This is easily one of the most charming family series on television. The characters are great and the writers capably expand on the universe of The Big Bang Theory. Fans of Sheldon Cooper should look no further: the second season of Young Sheldon is a must-see. Highly recommended.
