Young Sheldon is one of the most charming series on television. A must-see series (with plenty of fun for the entire family), the spin-off of The Big Bang Theory explores the adventures of a young Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) as he embarks on scientific explorations while growing up with his family in the state of Texas. The series features voice-over narration by Jim Parsons (as the voice of Sheldon). Created by Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory, Dharma & Greg) and Steven Molaro (The Big Bang Theory, The Class), Young Sheldon is must-see television.
Sheldon Cooper continues to take on a big adventure: college. Attending a collegiate universe (many years earlier than most his age), Sheldon must navigate school and balance new courses – including philosophy. When Sheldon's philosophy teacher causes him to question the state of his own reality, Sheldon faces deep questions he never considered before. Can science and philosophy intertwine?
Brother Georgie (Montana Jordan) also embarks on a new mission: making work-out dance videos to make an easy living. Can Georgie convince the school drama instructor, Mr. Lundy (Jason Alexander), to help make the videos a success? Meanwhile, Missy Cooper (Raegan Revord) begins middle school (and goes out on a date for the first time).
The entire Cooper family faces new challenges and adventures. Connie 'Meemaw' Tucker (Annie Potts) juggles multiple suitors. Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry) and George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber) do their best to continue to keep the family life managed (as more unexpected obstacles arrive). Life is never boring with the Coopers.
Season 4 is out of the best seasons of Young Sheldon to date. The storylines are charming and entertaining. The side-story involving Sheldon Cooper taking a philosophy course is one of the most charming storylines on the series to date. Given the scientific mind of Sheldon Cooper, the prospects of philosophy and the “unknown” reaches of a philosophical mind were entertaining. The storyline involving George and the production of dance-videos was also a great element. Georgie steals the spotlight with these comedic sequences.
Iain Armitage has grown as an actor. When Young Sheldon first began, Armitage was uneven in some of the earliest episodes. Armitage is more confident in the role now. Season 4 gives the actor plenty of opportunities to shine and for a young actor he delivers a pitch- perfect performance as Sheldon (making the series all the more entertaining to watch).
Montana Jordan continues to be one of the best supporting actors on the series – as the goof-ball brother, Georgie. Jordan has a knack for comedic timing and some of the best Season 4 episodes highlight his comedic skills. Perhaps the most understated but important actor on Young Sheldon is Zoe Perry (in the role of Mary Cooper). Perry plays the same role her mother Laurie Metcalf played on The Big Bang Theory and she delivers a fantastic performance.
"Why is the sky blue?"
Young Sheldon has an impressive production design which works well for the series. The art direction by Colin D. Irwin (Saving Grace, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) is similarly effective and works its wonders: providing a nice artistic style. The overall aesthetic fits Texas – and the time-period.
The cinematography by Buzz Feitshans IV (Community, Chuck) is one of the best production elements. The series looks bright and vibrant – almost like a ray of sunshine. The aesthetic fits the sunny tone of the sitcom and never seems out-of-place. Feitshans IV crafted a beautiful looking series.
The costumes by Linda M. Bass (Crash, The Net) are effective. Given the Texas backdrop and the time period of the series, the costumes seem convincing and true to each character on the series. These are effective designs by Bass. The costumes simply work.
The original music score composed by Jeff Cardoni (The Kominsky Method, Silicon Valley ) is another jubilant element of the production. Cardoni crafts a score that embellishes the series with a sense of charm and wonder. The score is never bleak sounding: the music fits the sitcom style perfectly. A lighthearted and energetic score that suits the material well.
Co-creators Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro pen the scripts (alongside an excellent staff of writers). Young Sheldon is at the top-of-its- game in season 4. The episodes are entertaining and have some enormously funny moments: making it a must-see season of the series. The series has grown: a distinctive spin-off that is every-bit as charming (and unique) as The Big Bang Theory.
Directed by Jaffar Mahmood (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Alex Reid (Up All Night, Malcolm in the Middle), Young Sheldon: Season 4 is a delight from start to finish. These episodes rate as some of the best. Mahmood and Reid bring the best out of the cast: making Young Sheldon a television classic in the making.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Warner Bros., Young Sheldon: Season 4 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The season looks beautiful in high-definition. Color reproduction "pops" with vibrancy. A crisp and engaging high-definition presentation, the cinematography shines. There were few issues with compression: the encoding is top- notch.
The release is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. The lossless audio presentation sounds crisp and clear throughout. Dialogue is clear and easy to understand. The music score is also well reproduced. The audio tracks never struggle to present the sound design effectively. A solid encoding.
Cooped Up with the Coopers (HD, 8:24) is a featurette including a remote webcam discussion between Young Sheldon cast members Iain Armitage, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Annie Potts, and Raegan Revord. Given COVID, the cast reunited to discuss the series online – and share some info on their day-to-day lives. Iain Armitage, for example, discusses his troubles with math. Series fans will enjoy the spirited discussion.
Young Sheldon is enormously entertaining. A perfect spin-off of The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon is a must-see for families and fans of the original program. The fourth season is possibly the best to date: the episodes are enormously charming. The entire cast does excellent work throughout the fourth season. The Blu-ray release features a strong presentation and a nice featurette including a discussion with the cast. Highly recommended.
