Overview

Young Frankenstein (1974)

"Young Frankenstein" is both a zany comedy and a cinematic tour de force. It has all the usual—and, in this case, slightly unusual—suspects: the reluctant scientist Frederick Frankenstein, who is actually the great-grandson of the infamous creature creator (pronounced "Fronkensteen", his spoiled fiancé, Igor the pop-eyed hunchback, his dizzy assistant, the castle's hideous head housekeeper, and, of course, the Monster.

Starring: Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn
Director: Mel Brooks

Young Frankenstein Blu-ray Movie Review

It's alive. Again.

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman September 11, 2014

Like some reanimated corpse brought back to life after a long dormant period, Mel Brooks’ legendary comedy Young Frankenstein is being released again on Blu-ray in a so-called 40th Anniversary Edition which may intrigue consumers who either didn’t buy the version(s) available in either The Mel Brooks Collection or Young Frankenstein, or who did buy one of the previous releases and are now wondering if this newest release boasts anything new. Unfortunately for those hoping for additional supplements or a new transfer/encode, this appears to be exactly the same release as graced The Mel Brooks Collection and the previous standalone release, save for a couple of tangential differences like packaging and disc art.

My colleagues Martin Liebman and Casey Broadwater have already covered the previous releases of Young Frankenstein, and I refer you to their reviews for information on content, video and audio quality, and supplementary features:

I personally own only The Mel Brooks Collection, but I can confirm that once the disc boots, it is exactly the same as the disc found in that set, down to menus, chapter stops, and bitrates.

Young Frankenstein Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

What more is there to say about Young Frankenstein than that it's an undisputed classic? While there may be incremental differences in the scores Marty, Casey and I have assigned to various categories, there's no question that we all agree this is a great release. The price on this re-release is certainly cheap enough to entice those who have never picked this up previously, and with the same excellent video and audio quality and bounteous supplements, Young Frankenstein easily comes Highly recommended.
