You Were Never Really Here Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov March 19, 2019

Lynne Ramsay's "You Were Never Really Here" (2017) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Australian label Umbrella Entertainment. There are no bonus features on this the disc. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

In the United States, Lynne Ramsay's film You Were Never Really Here was released on Blu-ray by Lionsgate Home Entertainment. For an in-depth analysis of the film, please see my colleague Jeffrey Kauffman's of this release here.

You Were Never Really Here Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Umbrella Entertainment.

It is clear that distributors across the world are accessing the same digital master when they prepare their local release of the film. Naturally, the basic characteristics of the technical presentation here should be more or less identical to those of the North American release that Lionsgate Home Entertainment produce.

The only area where I think meaningful improvements can be made is the encoding of some of the darker footage. Indeed, there are a couple of sequences where there are some minor but noticeable artifacts plus some extremely light blockiness (see screencapture #19). On the other hand, there is one other outdoor sequence where delineation struggles, but I am not at all convinced that the most obvious issues there are not on the master (see screencapture #11). To be honest, I suspect that the downscaling that was done plays a significant role, though some optimizations most definitely could have been made to improve things. The rest looks great to me. There is plenty of proper depth and a variety of different nuances that are quite easy to appreciate. Colors are stable and appear natural. (Note: This is a Region-Free Blu-ray release. Therefore, you will be able to play it on your player regardless of your geographical location).

You Were Never Really Here Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature. When turned on via the remote control, they appear inside the image frame.

The lossless track basically replicates the qualities of the original studio mix, so the depth, clarity, fluidity and dynamic nuances are as endorsed by Lynne Ramsay. For the record, while viewing the film, I did not detect any encoding anomalies to report in our review.

Unfortunately, there are no bonus features on this release.

You Were Never Really Here Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

The only aspect of You Were Never Really Here that I liked was the moody soundtrack. The rest is just familiar 'edgy' stylistic variations of the type that you could discover in all kinds of different recent violent thrillers, from Drive and Lost River to The Neon Demon and The House That Jack Built. I was not impressed. Umbrella Entertainment's release is sourced from the same master that Lionsgate Films worked with when it prepared the North American release of the film.
