Wynonna: Concert From My Place Blu-ray Movie Review

House concerts have become increasingly popular through the years, and it may come as a surprise to see how some pretty well established artists have been able to do what might be called "micro tours" by performing at various private residences of fans and the like. In this case "house concert" should probably be taken a bit more literally, since this engaging performance by Wynonna Judd was shot at her home outside of Nashville, Tennessee. Mercury Studios seems to be on something of a Wynonna kick, given not just this release but also the recent Mercury Blu-rays of Still Playin' Possum: Music and Memories of George Jones and Iconic Women of Country, where she's also a "featured player". Here, though, she's definitely front and center (literally in terms of the stage performances) in both musical moments but also in some really engaging interstitial interviews, several featuring Wynonna and her drummer husband Cactus Moser. Also in the band are Dow Tomlin, bass; Charlie White, guitar; Justin Weaver, guitar; K.C. Martin, keys; Gary Carter, steel guitar; and special guests Waylon Payne and Brandi Carlile.

Wynonna: Concert From My Place is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Mercury Studios with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. There are a few "artier" moments like the split screen performance seen in screenshot 4 where things are what I'd call quasi-widened. Like the two other country-fied Blu-rays linked to above, this is another perfectly acceptable "tv"-esque presentation, with nice clarity and some nice fine detail levels, to the point that you can clearly see the makeup powder on Wynonna's face during the live performance segments. The palette is nicely suffused and all of the evocative establishing and other home shots look great. A few combing artifacts can be spotted during fast strumming or drumming.

As with the two other Mercury Studios Blu-rays mentioned above, Wynonna: Concert From My Home features LPCM 2.0 audio. I'd probably rate this particular track at the head of the pack in terms of all three Blu-rays, as there's some clear separation in the live performance moments, and even some of the ambient environmental sounds, as in outdoor noises at the very beginning of the piece, actually have clear stereo imaging. All of the spoken material is delivered cleanly and clearly. Like the two other Blu-rays, this one does not have any subtitles.

Wynonna: Concert From My Place Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

This is another bare bones Blu-ray release with any supplementary content. While not a "scorable" supplement, unlike the other two Blu-rays mentioned above, this one has an inner print on the sleeve which offers band, production and songwriting credits, along with a couple of stills from the live performance segments.

Wynonna: Concert From My Place Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

One of the really interesting things those who pick up the two above mentioned country-centric Blu-rays along with this one is seeing how seemingly resilient and dare I say omnipresent Wynonna Judd is, especially after all the Judd family has endured over the past few years. This is an appealing combo platter of winning live performances and some "at home" footage that seems to suggest Wynonna is in a pretty good place, both literally and figuratively. Technical merits are generally solid within the context of what is in essence a "pledge week" TV special. For Wynonna fans at least, Recommended.
