Wreck-It Ralph 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman November 13, 2018

Disney and Best Buy have collaborated on this unique SteelBook UHD release for the hit animated film 'Wreck-It Ralph.' The film is releasing to the UHD format for the first time just ahead of the sequel's theatrical debut. This SteelBook release includes the same two discs included in the film's wide release UHD: the film on both UHD and Blu-ray. For more on this SteelBook's look and feel, see the 'Special Features and Extras' section below for more detail.

Wreck-It Ralph 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

Wreck-It Ralph's SteelBook variant takes a fairly serious departure from the colorful front cover of its wide-release UHD counterpart. The SteelBook's front cover features an angry 8-bit Ralph head floating in the middle of an arcade machine screen. The head is texturally raised above the screen, which is slightly sunken within the screen's border. The screen and machine are made of dark blues and black colors, allowing the face, with bold red and orange accents, to stand apart. At the bottom is a joystick and two buttons, all of which have had careful texturing work applied to give them a tactile feel. The rear cover replicates another part of the arcade machine. At the top left is a textured vent and on the right are the coin slots and the key lock, which are likewise textured. The rest of the rear features the same color scheme as the front. The SteelBook's spine shakes things up, taking on a dark red color with the film's title, preceded by a Disney logo, centered. A UHD logo appears at the bottom. The front and rear covers are extremely prone to showing fingerprints.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand side tabs. The two discs, one Blu-ray and one UHD, are housed on the right, staggered-stacked. The inner print is a two-panel spread image featuring a repeating pattern of Ralph heads (the same from the front), full-body Ralphs, Ralph fists, and "Argh" quote bubbles, along with some small red blocks/bricks. The background color is a dark blue similar to the arcade machine on the front and rear exterior panels.

Wreck-It Ralph 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Wreck-It Ralph's SteelBook is a delight. It's unique, textured, and takes on a different look depending on whether one is looking at it from the front or rear or simply seeing the spine on the shelf. The only downside is that the front artwork might have been more effective as an entire scene from the Fix-It Felix game rather than an 8-bit floating head. Recommended.
