Well, it's not really made of chocolate, but those with a severe sweet tooth may want to grab this Walmart-exclusive Steelbook edition of Paul King's Wonka, the 2023 musical prequel to you-know-what. Released alongside the separate standard 4K and Blu-ray editions, this variant features both formats (what will they think of next?) and identical disc contents to their standard wide-release counterparts. So there's a little more here than just a packaging upgrade but, due to this Steelbook's rarity, wanting it and actually finding it are two different matters entirely.
NOTE: This review's screenshots are sourced from the separate Blu-ray edition.
For my separate thoughts on the included 2160p/HDR and 1080p/SDR transfers on both discs, please see my recent reviews of both Warner Bros.' standard 4K edition and the Blu-ray.
For my thoughts on the Dolby Atmos mix included on both discs, please see my review of the 4K edition.
This two-disc set ships in a beautiful semi-gloss Steelbook whose visual design is that of a Wonka-branded chocolate box with eight different confections (seen prominently during the film, and designed by chocolatier Gabriella Cugno) on the front and back. Each one, as well as its surrounding "tray", are embossed and debossed to give a slight illusion of depth that works well enough. Wonka's logo and credits are also present but flat with no further embellishments, and each of the front and back images are framed by a warm golden trim that matches the spine. Inside is a two-panel pile of assorted Wonka chocolates with both discs on overlapping hubs to the right. Aside from the lack of a chocolate scent (anyone remember this?), there's no room for improvement here. It's a great looking Steelbook.
Included on each disc is an identical set of bonus features from the separate standard releases. They're listed below in name only, but more details about each one can be found in my review of the 4K edition.
Paul King's musical fantasy Wonka was a surprise holiday hit less than three months ago, earning solid ticket sales and decent reviews to boot. It plays nearly as well on the small screen and especially in 4K, where new and returning fans can truly appreciate its production design and visual flourishes. The separate wide-release 4K and Blu-ray editions will do just fine by themselves, depending on your setup... but for both formats, you'll have to scoop up this increasingly rare (and wonderfully designed) Steelbok from Walmart, either in-store or online. Good luck!
