Wonder Woman Blu-ray Movie Review
While You're Waiting for Live Action . . .
Reviewed by Michael Reuben May 14, 2017
As an appetizer and tie-in to their forthcoming live-action Wonder
Woman, Warner Brothers is
re-releasing the 2009 animated version of Princess Diana's origin story, which was the fourth
film in the DC Universe's ever-expanding animated world (now at twenty-eight entries and
counting). The new disc—dubbed a "Commemorative Edition"—appears to contain the same
VC-1 encode as the original 2009 release, although the
sound has been re-encoded and additional languages have been added. A new extra promotes the forthcoming summer tentpole, but some
of the extras from the earlier version have been dropped.

Ken Brown's original review of
Wonder Woman
provides an informative analysis. The feature
score has been copied from Ken's review.
Wonder Woman Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

As noted above, the video presentation on the "Commemorative Edition" appears to be the same
one offered by the previous disc, as evidenced by use of the
VC-1 codec that Warner has since
abandoned. The video score has been copied from Ken's review but lowered slightly, because,
after eight years, Warner could at least have offered a superior encode with a higher average
bitrate.
Wonder Woman Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

Wonder Woman's 5.1 soundtrack was encoded on the 2009 release in Dolby TrueHD, but the
"Commemorative Edition" re-encodes the same soundtrack in DTS-HD MA and adds Dolby
Digital 2.0 tracks in French, Spanish and Portuguese. The decision to expand the language
options no doubt accounts for the need to remaster the main soundtrack, but there is no indication
that the end result is any different from what Ken reviewed
eight years ago.
Wonder Woman Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

Extras new to the "Commemorative Edition" are listed below:
- What Makes a Wonder Woman (1080p; 1.78:1; 10:06): This overview of the character
and her history features an array of interviewees, including Lauren Montgomery, director
of the 2009 animated feature, and Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot, director and star of the
forthcoming live-action feature.
- A Sneak Peek at Batman and Harley Quinn (1080p; 1.78:1; 9:08): A preview of the
upcoming DCU Animated feature featuring the voice of
Big Bang Theory's Melissa
Rauch.
- Trailers: A trailer for DC
Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year is included among the
extras. At startup, the disc plays trailers for the forthcoming live-action Wonder
Woman
and Teen Titans: The Judas
Contract.
The following extras have been ported over from the 2009 release. Further discussion can be
found in Ken's
review:
- Wonder Woman: A Subversive Dream (1080p; 1.78:1; 25:36).
- Wonder Woman: Daughter of Myth (1080p; 1.78:1; 25:40).
- Creative Team Commentary.
Extras from the 2009 release that have been
omitted from the Commemorative Edition are as
follows:
- Animated Green Lantern First Look.
- Bonus Justice League Episodes ("Paradise Lost" parts 1 and 2, "Hawk and Dove", and
"To Another Shore").
- Sneak Peeks (Wonder Woman, Batman: Gotham Knight, and Justice League: The New
Frontier).
Wonder Woman Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

The "Commemorative Edition" supplants the 2009 release of Wonder Woman, which has now
gone out of print (although it is available from resellers), but the new disc doesn't offer any
audio/video upgrade, and the new extras do not make up for those dropped in the transition. New
buyers will certainly get their money's worth, but existing owners have no compelling reason to
upgrade.
