Wonder Woman 1984 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 15, 2021

Warner Brothers and Amazon UK have collaborated on a retailer exclusive UHD SteelBook release for the 2020 Superhero film 'Wonder Woman 1984.' Both the UHD and Blu-ray discs will play on U.S. Region-A players. The discs may feature alternate language options but appear to offer identical main audio and video presentations while the Blu-ray brings over the same extras from the U.S. disc. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Wonder Woman 1984 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

Warner Brothers' Amazon UK exclusive SteelBook release features a matte texturing that won't readily display handling fingerprints. The front image screams "retro." Wonder Woman soars in the center, left arm pointed upwards in something of a Superman pose with the golden winged armor spread wide out to the edges. At the top of the SteelBook, flanking a white DC logo center, are large red "WW" letters. Behind Wonder Woman and running through much of the center and bottom are the numbers "84," green up front and trailed by some additional shades of green, yellow, orange, and red. "Wonder Woman 1984" text appears in plain white lettering bottom center; the SteelBook would have looked better without that last part, and the DC logo, for that matter. The rear panel simply features a number of colorful streaks running vertically down a black background. A faint billing block appears bottom center. The spine is also flat black and features the film's title in the stylized "WW84" text from the front as well as the plain white "Wonder Woman 1984" in white. DC and Warner Brothers logos appear at the bottom.

Inside, an advertisement for other DC properties is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor inside the invisible jet while flying through Fourth of July fireworks, recreating one of the film's best scenes.

Wonder Woman 1984 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

For this reviewer's money the Amazon UK SteelBook is the more attractive option next to the U.S. Best Buy Exclusive. It's less busy but still interestingly colorful. It's imperfect -- getting rid of everything on the front except for the "WW84" would have cleaned it up considerably but...marketing. The film is decent enough, nowhere near so good as the first, but the UHD A/V specs and the bundled supplemental content are very good. Recommended.
