Wolf Children Blu-ray Movie Review

Damn, am I a furry now?

Reviewed by Randy Miller III May 22, 2026

I haven't seen all of writer-director Mamoru Hosoda's films yet... but his best thus far is clearly 2012's Wolf Children, a tremendously effective fantasy/drama that works exceptionally well on multiple levels. Based on his original story and a screenplay he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Satoko Okudera (their final partnership, sadly), it concerns a young mother and her unusual family growing up under difficult circumstances. Featuring beautiful animation and a wonderful pace that builds towards its moving climax, Wolf Children is a near-masterpiece of animation that immediately followed Hosoda's substantially different but similarly effective 2009 film Summer Wars (4K review forthcoming).

For a synopsis and critique of Wolf Children, please see my separate review of Shout Factory's 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook Combo pack; it's also available as this stand-alone Blu-ray, and both releases attempt to replace several earlier out-of-print versions including FUNimation's 2013 Blu-ray. Both recent Shout Factory editions are reportedly sourced from a brand-new 4K "restoration" (not necessarily verbiage that should apply to a 14 year-old film, but I digress) and, while the 4K combo pack is my recommended pick, this stand-alone Blu-ray may get the job done for most fans looking to own a more affordable copy. Either way, this is a film worth adding to your collection.

Wolf Children Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

As usual, please head over to my recent review of the 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook Combo pack for comments about Wolf Children's general aesthetic and visual appearance, which looks very good in its "native" 2K here. The 4K disc wins out for slightly higher perceived image detail, increased color depth, and of course a higher bit rate; in comparison, a few very light compression artifacts can be seen on occasion here, though absolutely nothing out of bounds within format limitations. Overall, it's a solid effort and will look great on small to medium-sized displays. For owners of Funimation's 2013 Blu-ray or similar editions wondering how this "restoration" fares next to older presentations, a cursory back-and-forth comparison between Jeffrey's screenshots and my own suggest that this Blu-ray's picture is a shade darker and shows slightly crisper image detail (especially in regards to linework) with no obvious changes to the color palette or overall visual aesthetic. It's obviously better if I were forced to choose a winner, but still far from a night-and-day difference from any perspective... not that I'd expect such a thing from a film only 14 years old.

Wolf Children Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

For my thoughts on the included DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio tracks (the original Japanese as well as an English dub), please see my review of the 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook Combo pack which also points back to an earlier disc.

While I'm not sure about the subtitle options found on those earlier releases, both the 4K and Blu-ray included here offer separate English subtitle options for the dub and Japanese track, which is very much appreciated.

Wolf Children Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

This one-disc release ships in a keepcase with attractive cover artwork and a matching slipcover, if you're lucky enough to get one by now. As for the extras listed below (and detailed in my review of the 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook Combo pack), they're ported over from Funimation's 2013 Blu-ray but two English-language extras are dropped.

  • Director's Cut Trailers (6:03 total)

  • Interview with Director Mamoru Hosada (16:10)

Wolf Children Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

One of the best Studio Ghibli films that Studio Ghibli never made, Mamoru Hosada's Wolf Children is a fantastic family drama with light but appreciable fantasy elements that serve its story in a unique way. It's my favorite of his films that I've seen thus far, one that resonates deeply with accessible themes and is capably supported by thoughtful animation and memorable music. Shout Factory's pricier 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook Combo pack offers the strongest A/V presentation of the film to date, but this Blu-ray only editionwill get you most of the way there for about half the price. I'll give the edge to the Steelbook for its sleek packaging and both formats, but both are Highly Recommended.
