A killer is on the loose. Lives are being taken, and in broad daylight. A town is in the grips of fear. And the cops? Well, they’ll get around to it. 1971’s “Without Apparent Motive” isn’t a nail-biting thriller, but something moodier from co-writer/director Philippe Labro, who’s adapting a novel by Even Hunter and striving to give it all his own cinematic fingerprint. The story concerns a detective on the case of a serial sniper, but the picture isn’t too interested in providing the usual in supercop cinema. It opens with a Raymond Chandler quote and Labro attempts to remain in that atmosphere, following the lead character as he deals with clues and connections, trying to understand what’s going on without losing control of himself. Of course, the story is screaming for a more suspenseful approach, but Labro stays muted with “Without Apparent Motive,” which doesn’t encourage an exciting viewing experience, though the endeavor’s idiosyncrasy has its moments.

The image presentation (1.67:1 aspect ratio) for "Without Apparent Motive" is listed as "newly restored by Vinegar Syndrome from a studio-supplied master." Detail is strong throughout the viewing experience, exploring textured skin particulars on the cast and a wide range of fibrous outfits, showing off the styles of the day. Interiors remain dimensional, exploring living spaces and offices. Exteriors maintain appealing depth, examining French locations and community movement. Color is sharp, with rich primaries, including red blood. Period hues are vivid, observing the oranges and browns of the day. Skin tones are natural. Greenery is distinct, along with art displays. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is nicely resolved. Source is in good condition.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix delivers crisp dialogue exchanges, preserving performance choices, and silences are maintained as well with the moody film. Scoring carries sharp instrumentation, supporting with a jazzier sound at times, and whistling additions are understood. Sound effects are appreciable, along with atmospherics with exterior activity.

"Without Apparent Motive" eventually makes things more personal for Carella, and his ability to deduce the location of sniper shots is put to the test, adding a touch of superhero activity to the movie. The ultimate resolution of the story grows a little labored as Labro attempts to clarify motivation, following a tale that leads into sordid details involving deeply troubled people. Again, high tension isn't present in the picture, but one can certainly appreciate a major push for mood in the endeavor, as Carella's hunt leads him to a few strange places. "Without Apparent Motive" is also supported by fine performances, finding Trintignant appealingly committed to Carella's odd behaviors and displays of masculinity. The character isn't exactly a master detective, but there's a coolness to Carella that blends well with Laboe's attempt to add eccentricity and attitude to the picture. It all helps to make "Without Apparent Motive" as memorable as it can be without a main source for screen tension.
