Wet Dreams Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf April 29, 2023

Marriage is a big dead end in terms of bedroom satisfaction in 1985’s “Wet Dreams,” with director Henri Pachard using relationship incompatibility to inspire a study of fantasy experienced by a handful of characters. There’s limited story here, with a basic introduction into a bad relationship soon transformed into a series of sexual encounters with heightened circumstances, tracking the growing confidence of a woman who can’t get much out of her husband, but can tour all sorts of sensual encounters just by dreaming it up.

Jeannie (Cody Nicole) was a virgin until she was married, but life with her husband, Ralph (Eric Edwards), isn’t as stimulating as she was led to believe. Bored and confused, Jeannie elects to share her woes with pal Sue (Renee Summers), who understands what her friend is going through. Her advice is for Jeannie to fully immerse herself in the world of fantasy, using the people around her to inspire deeply sexual thoughts and role- play scenarios, using the power of imagination to take back her own pleasure. Following this order, Jeannie begins to experiment with daydreams, cooking up heated encounters with strangers and repairmen as she figures out her tastes in forbidden thoughts.

“Wet Dreams” isn’t a completely thought-out production, with Pachard basically overseeing a series of situations born from Jeannie’s mind, allowing the production to limit money spent on story and locations, with most of the endeavor happening in small spaces. We’re introduced to Jeannie on her wedding night with Ralph, finding the pair fighting lubrication needs as they try to make some bedroom magic happen, struggling with communication and experience. Sue is the unofficial superhero of “Wet Dreams,” encouraging her pal to think bigger when it comes to erotic inspiration, with the pair embarking on a test case involving a waiter at a local bar, and, unfortunately, a stick of butter is introduced to the three- way. Thank goodness this feature wasn’t captured in Smell-O-Vision.

“Wet Dreams” abandons what little story there is for fantasy situations, watching Toni (Sharon Kane), a testy bartender have it out with a pushy customer (Joey Silvera), with the pair working on their anger issues in an extended S&M sequence. A plumber (Silvera) can’t quite fix a tub for Jeannie, but he’s ready to satisfy other needs. Toni’s brother, Stan (Casey Moran), comes this close to an incestual pass at his sister, only to turn his attention to a telescope, enjoying a visit from a woman he’s been watching. And Jeannie gets involved with a warring couple at the bar, looking to bring temporary peace to a troubled relationship.

Wet Dreams Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation is listed as "newly scanned & restored in 2K" from a 35mm original negative. "Wet Dreams" is not an expansive production, mostly contained to a few rooms, but color is lively, with define primaries doing well with costuming choices and period decoration. Skin tones are ample and natural. Detail is excellent, providing a clear look at body particulars and hair, and clothing is fibrous, ranging from lacy lingerie to cocktail dresses. Interiors are reasonably dimensional, exploring living and social spaces. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is fine and film-like. Source has several points of damage, and some judder is present.

Wet Dreams Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix offers a simple understanding of dialogue exchanges coming from a range of acting skill. Scoring favors a slightly funkier sound, and instrumentation is passable, and magical chimes are appreciable. Some mild damage is detected.

Wet Dreams Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

"Wet Dreams" is entertaining, and it gets pretty far on weirdness, with Pachard not even trying to create connective tissue at times, strictly here for the sexual possibilities of the premise, which climaxes with Jeannie and her time with a dishwasher repairman. Relationship issues are gradually erased from the endeavor, which shows more interest in ways to recycle sets and reuse performers, offering a low-budget odyssey into heated visions of erotic desires.
