West Side Story 4K Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Randy Miller III March 21, 2022
Released alongside the standard 4K edition, a Best Buy-exclusive 4K Steelbook, and even a Wal-Mart-exclusive 4K edition Disney and Target have collaborated on an exclusive 4K
variant edition of Steven Spielberg's West Side Story. Like recent Target exclusives, it amounts to nothing more than a deluxe
slipcover with a few printed goodies inside... but the film's bold visuals suit this type of artwork-driven variant, and the alternate cover
design is great.

standard 4K edition.

West Side Story 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

This two-disc set ships in a standard dual-hubbed keepcase with a deluxe slipcover (detailed below); a Digital Copy redemption slip is also
tucked inside. The bonus features are identical to the wide release.
- Exclusive Packaging - Although the interior keepcase is identical to the wide release, Target's edition includes a
rather nice-looking painted variant fold-out slipcover that extends from the front to the back with Tony, Maria, the dueling Sharks and Jets, a fire escape
meeting, and an expressive red, white, and blue flag waving in the foreground. Interior panels feature Tony and Maria behind their respective flags set
against a plain off-white background. Also tucked inside the left-hand interior panel (behind Tony) are two foil-etched prints; seen above and below,
these shiny cards are slightly smaller than a regular keepcase and feature two separate collages, one of which is identical to the outer design save
for its framing. (After some digging, it turns out the credited artist on both is Mexican-Cuban-American illustrator Orlando Arocena, whose digital artwork has graced many posters, magazines,
and variant covers.) Overall, it's a colorful effort and suits the film's style nicely.
West Side Story 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Steven Spielberg's remake West Side Story is a lively, well-made musical that was warmly received by audiences and critics alike upon its
theatrical release late last year, and in some circles is preferred to the original 1961 version. It looks great on 4K and the Dolby Atmos audio sounds fantastic too and, while the extras are
underwhelming, it's a an impressive package that fans and first-timers will enjoy. Target's exclusive 4K edition adds attractive design elements to their
variant fold-out slipcover including a striking character collage and two foil-etched prints; if that sounds like a worthwhile upgrade for the minimal price
difference, grab a copy while they're still available.
