Overview

Waterworld 4K (1995)

Centuries of global warming have caused the polar ice caps to melt, flooding the earth as civilization is left adrift. The inhabitants of this once-flourishing planet cling to life on incredible floating cities, their existence constantly threatened by Smokers — bands of marauding pirates who roam the featureless surface of Waterworld. For the survivors, one chance remains: a solitary hero, known only as the Mariner. Battling the Smokers and their ruthless leader, the Deacon, the Mariner sets out with a beautiful woman and a mysterious little girl on a search for a new beginning.

Waterworld 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman July 13, 2019

Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for 'Waterworld.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Waterworld 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

This is a dark and glossy SteelBook with a propensity to collect fingerprints. The front is primarily black around its periphery with an aqua-colored reproduction of Enola's tattoo in all of its complexity, complete with Far East-style writing within the symbol and running vertically along its left and right sides. A few smears of aqua color dot the top and bottom front panel edges. The rear side maintains the aqua coloring, making it the primary hue, shading brighter towards the middle and darker towards the edges. An image of a can of "Smeat," one of the funnier props in the movie (meant to resemble Spam) appears in full color, center. A Universal logo and some legal notifications appear center bottom in white lettering. A model number appears unobtrusively bottom right. The spine carries over the glossy black coloring. The film's title appears center in an aqua color, darker on the "Water" side of the text and lighter on the "world" side. A Universal studio logo appears bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a black-and-white still image of The Mariner on the left and a snarling Deacon on the right. Both appear in front of a solid black background.

Supplementally, this set contains only the film's extended cut in 1080p/DTS 5.1 on the UHD disc and the film's standard definition trailer on the bundled Blu-ray.

Waterworld 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Waterworld's SteelBook is impressively designed but sort of like a mullet: down to business with an artistically complimentary image that defines the movie on the front and a playful, comical image on the rear. The inner print is simple and perhaps a welcome departure from something more predictable, like an ocean vista featuring the Mariner's ship sailing into the sunset. The on-disc UHD content is quite good. Recommended.
