Some might be jokingly wondering if Wynonna Judd has secretly acquired a majority stake in Mercury Studios, formerly known as Eagle Rock Entertainment. Whereas Eagle Rock tended to offer a lot of, well, rock oriented Blu-ray releases (especially a ton of so-called "SD Blu-rays" devoted to the evidently bottomless well of Rolling Stones live performance videos), recently Mercury Studios has been purveying a series of releases that are most definitely skewed toward the country side of things, several of which have, in addition to this latest release, featured Wynonna, including Iconic Women of Country, Still Playin' Possum: Music and Memories of George Jones and (not to state the obvious, but to state the obvious) Wynonna: Concert From My Place. If Ms. Judd's appearances are therefore arguably becoming kind of rote on Mercury's live performance outings, this particular concert, given in homage to the great Patsy Cline, offers at least a few perhaps slightly more surprising performers, including Kristin Chenoweth, Rita Wilson and Pat Benatar, all of whom put some interesting spins on the tunes they do. What's instantly apparent about this concert is its understandable emphasis on female performers, and there's a really appealingly wide gamut of approaches toward the legendary Cline's canon throughout this live performance.

Walkin' After Midnight: The Music of Patsy Cline Live at the Ryman is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Mercury Studios with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 1.78:1. This is an appealing looking presentation for the most part, buoyed by above average lighting on the stage which helps to illuminate both the features singer(s) and the band. The palette is very healthy throughout and detail levels are consistently commendable. There are perhaps more than the usual assortment of combing artifacts on display, and occasionally kind of oddly the very center of the frame can be just very slightly less clear than the rest of the image, which may indicate a faulty lens.

Walkin' After Midnight: The Music of Patsy Cline Live at the Ryman features DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 options. The surround track nicely opens up the soundstage, with an attendant more fulsome midrange and low end. There is appealing clarity and dynamic range on both tracks. Interstitial spoken material is also delivered cleanly and clearly. There are no subtitles.

The Blu-ray disc contains no supplemental features (wasn't Wynonna available for an interview?, and, yes, that's a joke). A CD of the concert is included. The insert leaflet nicely credits the band and backup vocalists. For those interested in packaging, this is housed in a CD case.

This is an agreeable concert with some great singing, including by people not typically associated with country music, but I personally would have much preferred an audio Blu-ray of restored original recordings by Patsy herself. Technical merits are generally solid. Recommended.
