Lucio Fulci's "Voices From Beyond" (1991) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Severin Films. The supplemental features on the release include archival program with Lucio Fulci; recent program with actor Pascal Persiano; recent program with set designer Antonello Geleng; archival program with author and critic Stephen Thrower; vintage trailer; and more. In English or Italian, with optional English and English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

Very few people disagree that Lucio Fulci’s work after The Devil's Honey is underwhelming. There are different reasons for the massive decline in the quality of Fulci’s work. However, the most consequential is Fulci’s long struggle to overcome various health issues, including a severe depression that made it impossible for him to be as creative as he was a few decades earlier.

Voices From Beyond was an unusually personal film for Fulci. It materialized after he had effectively lost his battle with depression and entered a lonely, dark place that relentlessly supercharged the demons that were making him feel miserable. While facing these demons, Fulci had convinced himself that very few people in his life genuinely cared about him. He dedicated Voices From Beyond to them.

Nearly two-thirds of Voices From Beyond are about another very miserable middle-aged man named Giorgio Mainardi (Duilio Del Prete). After an unexpected massive internal hemorrhaging kills him, Mainardi returns as a spirit and urges his daughter, Rosy (Karina Huff), to reexamine the medical report describing his premature death. The spirit is convinced that the lethal hemorrhaging was not accidental and wants Rosy to find the evidence proving beyond a reasonable doubt that it is so. The spirit also wants Rosy to do it quickly, before Mainardi’s body decomposes. This way, the spirit can witness its revenge before it permanently transitions to The Other Side.

The remaining material is still related to Mainardi and Rosy’s investigation. However, it is also a portal to Fulci’s psyche. For example, several flashbacks reveal that Mainardi was far from a perfect man, and his desire to dominate the people in his orbit gradually turned them against him. Mainardi was successful and wealthy, and they passionately disliked him for this. He struggled with depression, too. It is not difficult to conclude that these flashbacks are related in some ways to Fulci’s past, but it is very difficult to tell how. This is largely why Voices From Beyond is not a substantially better film. It provides obvious clues that its story is a lot more intriguing than it appears, and then ignores all terrific opportunities to reveal why.

Unsurprisingly, several sequences feature appropriately graphic material. A few of these sequences also produce the close-ups that all classic Fulci shockers are remembered for. However, they are not attached to an appropriately tense atmosphere because Rosy’s investigation is not right for it.

As shot, Voices From Beyond is a small but decent genre film. However, it displays Fulci’s name, and this development instantly raises expectations pretty high. This is a problem because it works with material that cannot meet them. To be a better genre film, a portion of this material should have been tweaked to expose some of Fulci’s frustrations, possibly even a few of his demons, too. Then again, Voices From Beyond was most likely conceived as a piece of mental therapy that was helping Fulci, not another genre film reviving the strengths of Fulci’s most celebrated work.

Voices from Beyond 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Severin Films' release of Voices From Beyond is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked".

The release presents a new 4K restoration of Voices From Beyond, sourced from the original camera negative, on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray. In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with HDR. I viewed it in its entirety on 4K Blu-ray and later spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray.

I liked the 4K restoration and its native 4K and 1080p presentations a lot. The 4K restoration produces wonderful organic visuals that look fantastic on a large screen. However, I must immediately clarify that various visuals have drastically different qualities. For example, the nightmares and flashbacks produce softer visuals, some with different color temperature as well. Grain can be overexposed, too. It is pretty easy to tell that in some areas, camera filters are also used. However, these fluctuations are all very natural, so the intended stylization is as effective as desired. Color reproduction and balance are fantastic. All primaries and supporting nuances are perfectly set. As a result, the entire film has a fabulous, very convincing period appearance. There are no traces of any problematic digital corrections. The HDR grade is gentle and very effective. I thought that in areas where different highlights are intentionally slightly overexposed, the balance was even more impressive with HDR. The darker areas look very good, too. There are no distracting large cuts, debris, stains, or other similar age-related imperfections.

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 and Italian DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH (for the former) and English (for the latter) subtitles are provided.

I chose to view the film with the English audio track, which is the original track for it. However, both track feature rather average overdubbing. The English track is very healthy. Dynamic contrasts are quite limited, even in the busy sequences where some of Lucio Fulci's classic trickery is used to produce some excitement. I did not encounter any encoding anomalies to report in our review.

• About Death - in this archival audio interview, Lucio Fulci addresses some of the criticism Voices From Beyond received from American critics (some of whom claimed that he had copied material from Ghost) an d discusses his fascination with Death and The Other Side. Fulci also addresses the relationship between the dead man and his daughter in Voices From Beyond. The interview was conducted in 1990. In Italian, with English subtitles. (15 min).

• Beyond the Living - in this recent program, actor Pascal Persiano recalls his first audio for Lucio Fulci and comments on his directing methods. Persiano also comments on his contribution to Voices From Beyond and interactions with several other cast members. In Italian, with English subtitles. (16 min).

• A House for the Dead - in this recent program, set designer Antonello Geleng confirms that he worked with Lucio Fulci on three different projects, including Voices From Beyond. Geleng also describes the unique villa he chose for the film, a portrait he painted for it, and Fulci's personality behind and in front of the camera. Voices from Beyond 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

It is pretty easy to tell that a portion of the material Voices From Beyond works with is a portal to Lucio Fulci's psyche. However, nothing intriguing emerges from it, which is why Voices From Beyond remains only a decent genre film. I suspect this is intentional because it was meant to do plenty for Fulci's mental health, and only then entertain its audience as best as possible. Severin Films' combo pack presents a terrific new 4K restoration of Voices From Beyond with a very nice selection of bonus features, so Fulci completists should not miss it. RECOMMENDED.
