Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love is the third theatrical feature-film in the beloved anime franchise. Created by Rumiko Takahashi, Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love is a great chapter in the saga. The feature-film was released in cinemas on January 26th, 1985.
The film was distributed by TOHO for the original release in Japan. Executive produced by Hidenori Taga (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Urusei Yatsura: Only You), Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love features a theme song performance by Steffanie. Featuring film production by Kitty Films (Ranma ˝, Maison Ikkoku), Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love features voice-performances by Fumi Hirano, Toshio Furukawa, Mitsuo Iwata, Akira Kamiya, Kazuko Sugiyama, Kazuteru Suzuki, Masako Sugaya, Saeko Shimazu, Shinji Nomura, and Sumi Shimamoto.
Lum (Fumi Hirano), Ataru Moroboshi (Toshio Furukawa), and their best friends have set out for a day of relaxation. It is time for a day at the park! Lum, Ataru, and the others are attending a brand new and exciting amusement park. Despite the simple promise of a nice day of adventure, the group soon discover themselves encountering some troublesome danger as a series of increasingly strange occurrences causes havoc to run amok.
Ruu the Magician (Mitsuo Iwata) takes them on a wild, mysterious, and magical tour. After Ataru volunteers for the magic show, he finds himself being transformed into a giant hippopotamus. Could that be his new permanent state due to the strange magic of Ruu the Magician? As things become eerie at Tomobiki Marchenland, the gang has more on their plate than ever before – a magic show is just the beginning.
The characters are a huge part of the fun of the Urusei Yatsura film franchise. Lum and Ataru are great leading characters and the personalities of these two characters adds a lot to the fun. Lum is a bit mysterious, quirky, and full of unexpected charm. The character designs by Akemi Takada (Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku) are excellent and also add to the heart of these characters. Great design work by Takada.
The animation is outstanding and there are so many elements of the production to appreciate: the film has top-notch art direction by Shichirō Kobayashi (Kimagure Orange Road, Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro) and Torao Arai (Tenchi the Movie - Tenchi Muyo in Love, Urusei Yatsura) alongside the exceptional animation direction by Yuji Moriyama (Project A-ko, Urusei Yatsura). With an expert animation team, Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love has a great sense of style throughout the production. The animators create background animation that is lush, detailed, and beautiful. The animators did great work bringing the canvas of the series to life with this theatrical feature and the production has such an impressive sense of style that it is easy to become absorbed by the filmmaking.
The cinematography by Akio Wakana (Lupin the 3rd, Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer) is one of the most impressive aspects to the film. The cinematography is lush, engaging, and cinematic. The film highlights great visuals by Wakana. Wakana understands the artistry of the animation team and in highlighting the animation through the cinematography, the work by the cinematographer is utterly fantastic.
The score composed by Mickie Yoshino (Urusei Yatsura, Dragon Warrior) is one of the most important elements of the film and the music adds a great deal to the production. The score is exciting, moving, and exploratory. The score has a sense of adventure and this carries well through the magic aspects highlighted in the film. A fun score by Yoshino.
Written by Tomoko Konparu (Kimi ni Todoke - From Me to You, Urusei Yatsura: Only You), Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love is an ambitious and exciting script for the franchise. The third installment has an abundance of fun ideas. The concept of the third feature-film is enormously fun and the storytelling manages to highlight the work of Rumiko Takahashi in a fantastic way.
Kazuo Yamazaki (Maison Ikkoku, Slayers - The Motion Picture) directs. Director Yamazaki does a great job building on the anime franchise with this third feature-film in the Urusei Yatsura franchise. With Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love, the saga builds in more unexpected ways. The film has some impressive visuals and Yamazaki had big shoes to fill in following in the footsteps of director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor: The Movie). Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love is a fine showcase for the style of Yamazaki as well and with this third installment, director Yamazaki gives plenty of great moments to Lum, who steals the show.
Released on Blu-ray by Discotek Media, Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high- definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 widescreen. A impressive high-definition presentation and a naturally filmic image. The scan looks great overall – wonderful color and clarity. The transfer pops with good detail for the animation. The scan does occasionally have specks on the print but the shape of the transfer is fantastic overall.
The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (Stereo Remix), and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 (theatrical mono). Featuring sound direction by Shigeharu Shiba, Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love sounds great. Exceptional clarity and detail on the release. The encoding handles the dialogue and the score. A fantastic presentation that benefits from the lossless audio encoding on the release. It is nice to see multiple options provided by Discotek Media for the Japanese language presentation as well (with both the original mono and stereo audio mixes).

Urusei Yatsura – Remember My Love is an enormously entertaining entry in the beloved franchise. The third film in the saga has wonderful production values (including first-rate animation). The film has a compelling storyline and the entry is well directed by Kazuo Yamazaki (Slayers - The Motion Picture, Maison Ikkoku). The Blu-ray release features an excellent video and audio presentation. Highly recommended.
