Ultraman 4K Discovery 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman April 22, 2026

Though Mill Creek is now Alliance Entertainment, the Ultraman tap keeps flowing. Ultraman 4K Discovery is an early foray into the realm of 4K remasters for the show. It's basically a "sampler" set, pretty similar to Paramount's Blu-ray tease for the remastered Star Trek: The Next Generation way back in the earlier days of the Blu-ray format. This set includes 16 episodes from 1966's Ultraman, all presented with 2160p/HDR video. The results are universally outstanding (more on that below). It's basically an extended preview for the full season UHD release slated for a July 10, 2026 drop. And if this is what fans can expect of legacy Ultraman 4K releases in the coming months and years, then the franchise is sure to get yet another boost in visibility and delight fans afresh with a new, and the best, way to watch all over again.

Rather than just drop the episodes onto a couple of discs, Alliance has themed the sixteen episodes into four sets of four. These themes, and the episodes included within, are listed below. In addition, there is a loose narrative tied to the themes. The "story" unfolds inside “a very peculiar movie theater” where its manager has a special skill: he shows the patrons “films that will suit them perfectly.” When a young lady walks into the theater, all alone, the only attendee, he shows her the string of themed episodes, followed by a brief discussion about what they have watched and how the theme has impacted them. It's a nice little extra touch that wasn't necessary but adds a little bit of value to what is otherwise a (costly, at time of writing) preview of things to come. Do note that this release cuts out the episode intros, but I am confident these will be restored for the full season 4K release.

Disc One:

  • Stories of Life (1:45:33): Included are "Ultra Operation No. 1," "Shoot the Invader," "The Monster Graveyard," and "Farewell, Ultraman."
  • Stories of Romance (1:42:22): Included are "Science Patron, Move Out," "Demons Rise Again," "The Prince of Monsters, Part 1," and "The Prince of Monsters, Part 2."

Disc Two:

  • Stories of Friendship (1:43:57): Included are "Oil S.O.S., The Forbidden Words, Don’t Shoot, Arashi," and "The Little Hero."
  • Stories of Justice (1:45:42): Included are "The Phantom of the Snow Mountain," "Terrifying Cosmic Rays," "Terror on Route 87," and "My Home Is Earth."

The included screenshots are sourced from the 4K discs, output at 1080p. They are not representative of the on-disc image.

These 4K Ultraman episodes are legit. I seriously can't find a major flaw, either in the episodes themselves or the new, digitally shot intros and outros in the movie theater. Obviously, the star of the show is the episodes, but that initial cityscape shot introducing the new footage looks delightfully complex and clean, and even transitioning into the movie theater the new digital content delivers the sort of crisp and clean image audiences expect. But on to the main attraction. The episodes obviously retain the original 1.33:1, 4x3 aspect ratio, retaining vertical "black bars" on either side of the modern 1.78:1 HD display. What's inside that frame is excellent. The 2160p resolution delivers breathtaking clarity that is a major step forward from the previously issued Blu-ray. The picture finds a new level of detail intensity, capturing the complexities of Ultraman and Kaiju costumes with newfound levels of intimate texturing that shows all of the warts and flaws, and all of the tender loving care that went into making them, to a degree fans have never seen before, unless they've somehow laid eyes on some of it in person. Miniatures still look miniature, but man, that detail looks marvelous, even down to fine little pieces of artificial grass or other minute elements that all of a sudden just look amazingly rich. Human characters enjoy exceptional skin and clothing complexity, and real-world environments are crisp and impeccably clear. What's more, the grain structure is well defined. It's organically light, never clumpy or snowy or heavy, just pleasantly persistent in its natural state.

The HDR color grading is just as much a delight as the resolution. Colors find a new gear of excellence, bringing incredible richness to the screen that far surpasses anything the Blu-ray had to offer. The overall depth and vividness is just spectacular, far better than I expected from the material. Orange fireballs are amongst the highlights, delivering eye-popping accuracy and vividness that I didn't think possible from the show. Laser beams and other such sources of light look incredibly full and brilliant, too, as do the various colors on suits, natural greens, and other odds and ends in the various parts of the episodes. White snow in one episode is truly impressive for its vividness and balance. Black level depth is beautiful, and flesh tones look terrific. Wow! Ultraman fans, get ready for the show to be taken to the next level. I said it at above, and I'll repeat it here: this is legit.

Ultraman 4K Discovery 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  2.5 of 5

Alliance has included what appears to be the same original Japanese language DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 lossless soundtrack from the Blu-ray for this release, and here is a review for it. But the big surprise is the inclusion of a new English language dub, also presented in the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 encode. The track is pleasantly rich and full with quality spacing and excellent clarity to every element. Music and effects stretch the full width of the front side, and dialogue images nicely to the center area. For a 2.0 track, there' plenty of dynamic movement and a quality sense of weight to the material. The original audio remains preferable (English subtitles are included) but this English track makes for a great gateway into the series.

Ultraman 4K Discovery 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  0.5 of 5

The lone extra in this two-disc UHD release of Ultraman 4K Discovery is the Trailer (1080p, 1:43) for this release on disc two. No digital copy is included, either, but Alliance does ship this with a non-embossed slipcover.

Ultraman 4K Discovery 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Priced at $71 at time of writing, there is a heavy financial toll to experience Ultraman in 4K. It will be interesting to see where Alliance prices the full season release; hopefully they don't price fans out of the experience, especially considering the affordability of the series over the years on Blu-ray. The show looks absolutely terrific in 4K, though, and if this portends what's in store, it's going to be the best time in history to be an Ultraman fan. I can only recommend this release to hardcore franchise collectors and urge everyone else to wait on the full series release.
