CBS/Paramount has re-released the fan-favorite cult phenomenon TV show 'Twin Peaks', plus feature film 'Fire Walk with Me', to Blu-ray in new 'shelf-friendly' packaging. Like other recent shelf-friendly releases such as Dexter and Star Trek: The Original Series , this is essentially a repackage of the original release, but absent a key piece. See the supplemental section below for more information.

The slip box is nicely textured to differentiate dead Laura and living Laura.

First, the vitals. Unlike other "shelf-friendly" releases, Twin Peaks comes housed in a standard-height and extra-wide Blu-ray case, measuring
approximately 6.5" high, 5.25" deep, and 1" wide. It comes housed in a rather sturdy, and on the front slightly textured, slip-box, which beyond the
texturing and a very slight change in back design to accommodate the rather large UPC box on the Blu-ray case, is identical to the case presentation.
The nine
included
discs come housed on their own panels, rather than the staggered, overlapping formation of the larger Epik-Pak cases of the other shelf-friendly
releases the studio has recently brought to market.
So, great! This slimmer set saves some space. It lacks the custom packaging of the previous release, but, hey, cut corners to get cost down and all
that. What's likely to really exasperate fans, however, is the absence of the previous set's tenth disc. Everything up to there is identical, video and
audio presentations and every special
feature, including the motherlode 90-minute "Missing Pieces" collection from Fire Walk with Me...but this set stops there. That means no more
Between Two Worlds, Moving Through Time: 'Fire Walk with Me' Memories, Reflections on the Phenomenon of 'Twin Peaks',
Atmospherics, Trailers, or Fire Walk with Me Photo Gallery, all of which were on the other set's tenth disc. The good news is
that the price cut for this release is substantial. At time of
writing, this Twin Peaks is selling for $50 at Amazon, whereas that more feature-packed Twin Peaks is going for $83 at Amazon.
That's a nice
discount.

For viewers more interested in the show proper and who want to save some money to see it on Blu-ray, this is the release to buy. Yes, it's a shame that the studio couldn't cram in that tenth disc. Whether that's worth $30+ is up to the individual, but this set marks a good value for the show, and it does still feature the same high end video and audio and nine discs worth of extra content to boot. That's not insignificant for $50. But this isn't the "complete" Twin Peaks either. Think of it as the lower end model of that new car that doesn't come with heated seats, a backup camera, or that zippier engine. It still gets the job done, it's just not the premium model.
