Turning Red 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Randy Miller III May 6, 2022

Released in tandem with the standard 4K edition, Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, and Best Buy's exclusive Steelbook, Disney/Pixar and Target have collaborated on a store-exclusive version of Turning Red, the studio's latest big-screen fantasy drama. As with their past exclusives, on-disc contents are identical between each format's versions, with different design elements and/or printed goodies being the only tangible differences here. It's purely a matter of personal preference... unless you're a die-hard Disney collector and want one of each, obviously.

For a synopsis of Turning Red, please refer to my colleague Marty Liebman's reviews of the discs linked above.

Turning Red 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

This 4K/Blu-ray combo pack arrives in a standard keepcase with an exclusive fold-out slipcover and two sheets of colorful decals; both elements are exclusive to this release and, while less inherently collectable than both Target's earlier style of Digipak exclusives -- which featured full gatefold packaging, square-bound art books, or both -- still offers a little something extra for collectors, or those who don't like Steelbooks.

As mentioned earlier, on-disc bonus features are identical to those found on the standard 4K edition.

  • Exclusive Packaging - Target's exclusive 4K version of Turning Red includes a variant fold-out slipcover with soft pastel imagery that will appeal to fans of the film, with a cover design that features Mei and her panda alter ego. The interior resembles Mei's school notebook full of scribbles and drawings, a loose and lightweight design that continues on the back cover that features Mei's friends. Tucked inside the slipcover's "pocket" are two sheets of stickers/decals with characters and other drawings as seen above. It's not the most ambitious "art exclusive" compared to past Target exclusives (which have included everything from small art books to mini lithographs), but perhaps more functional for a 13 year-old just looking to decorate their own notebook.

Turning Red 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Turning Red may not be Disney/Pixar's strongest effort -- even in recent years, when their formerly bulletproof run of top-rated productions has drifted more regularly into "pretty good" territory -- but it's still fun and entertaining with colorful characters and very polished visuals. Similarly, Target's exclusive 4K edition isn't their best work, either: its design elements are nice and the included stickers may get some one-time use, but again this is more of a variant slipcover with very basic printed pack-ins than a fully-realized collectible. Nonetheless, fans will appreciate the option and, with on-disc contents identical to the other 4K editions, the choice comes down to personal preference.
