Troll Blu-ray Movie Review

Shout Factory released a Troll / Troll 2 double feature long enough ago that I frankly had forgotten I had reviewed it until this MVD Rewind Collection edition showed up, one which is evidently as of the writing of this review only available online from MVD itself. This is more or less a duplication of the Shout disc offering the first film (including the supplements), but it may be welcome for those who never got the Shout release, which now seems to be a bit hard to find.

As mentioned above, this film had a prior 1080 release by Shout Factory, and my Troll Blu-ray review offers plot information, a list of supplements and my reaction to the technical presentation of that release.

Troll Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Troll is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of MVD Visual's MVD Rewind Collection imprint with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. As can be seen by comparing the screenshots I've uploaded to accompany this review with the screenshots I uploaded to accompany the Shout Factory release there is basically no discernable difference between these two transfers, though I readily admit what struck me as a 3.5 in 2015 now looks more like a 3.0 in 2026, hence a slight score adjustment. The best thing about this transfer, mirroring the previous one, is a rather nicely vivid palette which pops with considerable force a lot of the time. What is apparently the same older master that Shout Factory used as a source for its release now looks considerably more dated, with a mottled and slightly digital looking grain field. There is all of the minor but still observable age related wear and tear that afflicted the original Shout Factory release.

Troll Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

This release offers an LPCM 2.0 track in lieu of the Shout Factory release's DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track, but as with the video side of things there's really no discernable difference between the two, at least that I could hear. Once again a slightly brash quality attends the higher registers, but overall this is a fluid and nicely prioritized track that delivers, dialogue, effects and score without any real issues. Optional English subtitles are available.

The keepcase features a reversible sleeve and encloses a fold out mini poster. Packaging also features a slipcover.

Troll Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

If you've ever wanted to see a film with Michael Moriarty, Sonny Bono, June Lockhart, Shelley Hack, Gary Sandy and (just for good measure) Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (in her big screen debut), this is the film for you. This basically repeats the old Shout Factory release that is now evidently hard to find, with similar acceptable if improvable video and generally fine audio. The main making of supplement is a lot of fun, for anyone who may be considering making a purchase.
