Paramount has released Michael Bay's 2014 film 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' to the UHD format with new 2160p/HDR/Dolby Vision video and Dolby Atmos audio. The UHD presentation is perfect, visually aurally alike. No new supplements are included, but this three-disc set carries over all the extras from the previously issued BD release.
Note that this UHD contains Dolby Vision. We are not currently equipped to review Dolby Vision but are researching equipment options and will be
upgrading soon.
Transformers: Age of Extinction's UHD presentation dazzles, perhaps even with more grandeur and spectacle than any of the franchise UHD
releases before it. The image, despite being sourced from a 2K digital intermediate, stands as one of the finest the format has seen yet. It's impeccably
clean
and razor sharp. The image finds all of its complex elements -- real and practical, large and small -- presented with striking command of textural
nuance. Facial definition couldn't be any more thorough, terrain any more complex, accumulated dust any more thick, wood and more rough, clothes
any
finer. Every character, stitch, scrap, blade of grass, rubble, everything in the image finds remarkable definition even well beyond the previously
released
1080p Blu-ray. Of course, and as with previous Transformers films on UHD, the digital elements find effortless complexity both on the large
scale side of the spectrum and within the all of the intimate little odds and ends that make them "work." The 4K resolution, even on a relatively modest
65" display, stands a good bit more complex and refined. HDR Colors are absolutely striking. The depth and punch are noticeable right away as a fleet
of alien craft set the world ablaze in the film's opening moments. Orange fireballs explode with unparalleled richness and punch. Every color, whether
large-scale Transformer colors or character eyes and lipstick, enjoy breathtaking pop and punch. Black levels are perfect and flesh tones are fine within
the film's somewhat warm color scheme.
Transformers: Age of Extinction features a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack for its UHD release, and all that really needs to be said is "wow." The track is spectacularly grand, huge in every way, precise with every stroke, immersive in each moment. Action is fluid, intense, and never misses a beat. Sound effects rip and ripple through the stage with ferocious depth and stretch. Explosions are insanely potent, movement is seamless, and every speaker, top end included, assaults the listener with chaotically refined sonic genius. Explosions? Rockin.' Gunfire? Zoomin'. Action? Swirlin'. For action bombardment, this one is tough to beat, and with chaos exploding from every corner, the listener will feel the intensity of action and terrifying repercussions with every pulse, blast, crack, and crumble. Add in effortlessly grand and cinematic music and perfectly realized dialogue, and there's no mistaking this track's credentials as one of the absolute best.
Transformers: Age of Extinction contains no supplements on the UHD disc, but a bonus BD included with purchase does contain all of the extras from the previous release. For full supplemental reviews, please click here. A digital copy code is included with purchase.
Transformers: Age of Extinction is typical of the franchise (even as it takes a different direction with some new central human characters in play). It's big, it's bloated, it's fantastic when it's on but a drag when Bay indulges too much in secondary and tertiary antics. The UHD, however, is amongst the finest on the market,. One couldn't ask for better picture, one couldn't ask for better sound. A massive array of bonus content carries over on a separate BD. Highly recommended as a tech demo if nothing else.
