Toy Story 4 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman October 8, 2019

Disney and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the hit digitally animated film 'Toy Story 4.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

What a peculiar design choice. Disney just recently released the previous three Toy Story films to 4K SteelBook (see here, here, and here). Those were very colorful, buoyant presentations, filled with a myriad of cheerful tones. This one, not so much. The front cover is predominately brown, with a light source shining in from off to the right, illuminating a trio of characters (and lightening the right-hand side). From left to right are Buzz, Woody, and Bo Peep. Each of them appears in a fairly standard pose. Buzz looks off to the left, Woody offset center, and Bo Peep to the right. The rear panel is similarly colored in a flat, unattractive brown. Here, a light source illuminates from the left. Rear panel characters include Forky, Bunny, Ducky, and Duke Caboom, the latter of whom appears on his bike top right. Small white type copyright and model number text appears at the bottom. The spine maintains the brown color, growing lighter to the center where the film's title may be found, accompanied by "Disney Pixar" text. An UltraHD logo appears at the top and "Pixar" at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code floats; there are no tabs on the left. The three discs appear on three hubs. One disc appears on its own on the left-hand side while the others may be found on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that depicts Ducky, Bunny, and Buzz from left to right, standing in front of a few other toys.

This is a surprisingly bland, boring SteelBook. The brown tones are unflattering and the artwork across the front, back, and interior is uninspired. The on-disc content is very good, but those buying for the SteelBook won't find it to be a match for the others in the series. Unsure what Disney was thinking here. For hardcore SteelBook collectors only.
