Tosh.0: Deep V's Blu-ray Movie Review

Shallow E's.

Reviewed by Martin Liebman December 23, 2012

Entertainment has moved from the big to the small screen and now to the computer monitor where everyday folks can become instant celebrities by filming themselves in the act of doing some pretty stupid things. Some are intentional, some are accidental, but no matter the origin it's all up for grabs on the Tosh.0 show, a new Comedy Central staple that lampoons all things YouTube and with a decidedly adult twist.

It's me!

In Deep V's, Daniel Tosh once again tackles all manner of Internet videos in which people get hurt in some manner or otherwise make fools of themselves. He often paints participants crudely and with colorful adult language, mocking their actions and creating his own backstories for the people and the incidents captured on camera. He sometimes speaks with his "victims" and occasionally helps them "redeem" themselves by recreating the incident to a more positive outcome or, in some cases, magnifying videos by re-staging them with superior production values.

Something like Tosh.0 is an acquired taste. Tosh lampoons everything from the gross to the absurd to the downright unfunny, such as when a baseball pitcher is struck in the head by a line drive. How is a potentially serious injury funny, particularly when the incident occurred during a baseball game and not a stupid stunt gone horribly wrong? Tosh will upset some viewers with his vulgar language and unsympathetic approach to commenting on some videos that probably don't deserve his brand of insight. This is one of the most subjective programs on television; no one critical voice -- positive or negative -- should determine whether one chooses to watch or not. Chances are the people who won't want to watch it know instinctively to stay away.

Tosh.0: Deep V's Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Tosh.O: Deep V's features a clean and pleasant high definition image. There are largely only two main components to the program: messy and compressed internet video clips and shots of Daniel Tosh standing in front of an artificial background. The latter offers sufficient clarity, detail, and color, along with a bit of noise. Some of the recreated videos, interviews segments, and the like that occur away from his static background also enjoy all the basic video elements necessary and in place for a quality HD release.

Tosh.0: Deep V's Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.5 of 5

Tosh.O: Deep V's features an adequate Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. Audience applause and various "oohs" and "aahs" sound a bit mushy, but the effects are well-spaced and make use of the surround channels, placing the listener in the middle of the crowd. Daniel Tosh's dialogue comes through clearly, though surrounding elements sometimes rise close to the level of dialogue. Never is the dialogue drowned out but the balance could stand a slight adjustment.

Tosh.0: Deep V's Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

Tosh.O: Deep V's contains all of its supplementary features on disc two. Included are eleven unnamed video clips that the packaging describes as "Extended Redemption Interviews," "'If Daniel Fought Celebrities' - Extended," and "The Uncut 24-Minute Human Centipede Spoiler."

Tosh.0: Deep V's Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Paramount/Comedy Central's Blu-ray release of Tosh.O: Deep V's contains acceptable video and audio for a comedy program released to Blu-ray. Recommended to fans; newcomers or those easily offended by adult language should proceed with caution or skip on the release altogether.
