Together 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf December 2, 2025

Body horror pays a visit to couples therapy in “Together,” which is the feature-length filmmaking debut for Michael Shanks. He heads into Cronenberg Country with the endeavor, using the ways of the flesh to explore a corporeal breakdown between two people who’ve stopped communicating with each other, on their way to living separate lives. The universe has other plans, and Shanks labors to create a nightmare to follow on multiple levels of interpretation, spending the first half of the picture creating a successful mystery concerning possible evil and a potential break up. “Together” makes some questionable creative decisions as it hunts for an ending, limiting the lasting impact of its dramatic mission, but the movie remains vivid enough to engage, finding pockets of ugliness to investigate, and the writing has a few things to share about the struggles of cohabitation and partner support.

Tim (Dave Franco) is an unemployed musician in his thirties still trying to make his dreams happen. He’s in a relationship with Millie (Alison Brie), who’s been hired as a teacher across the state, inspiring a life-changing move for the couple, which Tim isn’t happy with, also hesitating when his girlfriend proposes marriage in front of their friends. Settling into their new place, Tim and Millie elect to go for a hike in the area, but exploration is interrupted by an accident, as Tim falls through a hole in the ground, ending up pulling Millie into a cave. Their surroundings contain the remains of some type of church and a small pool of water, which they eventually drink from to stay alive. Finding their way out of the cave, the couple tries to return to normalcy, but strange magic isn’t making the journey easy. They’re taken over by a type of force that’s physically pulling them together, putting Tim on the hunt for answers as his body demands to merge with Millie.

Shanks provides a taste of the horrors to come, starting “Together” in the cave, where a pair of dogs are drinking from the water source. The pooches don’t end up living successful, separate lives, presenting an image of body melt to help jolt the first act of the picture. Shanks pulls out of terror to introduce Tim and Millie, and the pair are going through some stuff as they map out a plan for their shared future. The writing adds layers of irritability to the coupling, especially with Tim, who’s been trying to make it as a guitarist for years, only to submit to a move that will pull him out of potential professional opportunities that weren’t coming anyway, causing friction between the lovers. “Together” establishes tension through the botched proposal, adding elements of emasculation and insecurity to the characterizations, but a change of life remains unstoppable as Tim and Millie enter their new surroundings.

“Together” graduates to a survival challenge once the couple falls into the cave, trying to make sense of what they’re seeing, including ceremonial bells. They’re also left with each other, offered time for new intimacy as Tim details the horrors of his past, including a family history of mental illness. Tim and Millie manage to find a way home, but things are different, and Shanks begins to bring fear to the coupling, though he does so through a few cheap jolts involving nightmare visits. “Together” turns into a detective tale to some degree when Tim starts to understand the trouble he’s in, learning more about others who’ve disappeared. And Millie’s story follows her to school, making a connection with colleague Jamie (Damon Herriman) as she deals with an emotional situation.

Screencaps are taken from the Blu-ray.

The image presentation for "Together" works with softer imagery, but detail is appealing on skin particulars, with textures of the flesh prioritized by the production. Fine hairs and fibrous clothing are also defined. Housing interiors maintain dimension, and exteriors are deep as the characters visit nature. Color is delicate, handling golden lighting to satisfaction, while bolder primaries on clothing are defined. Greenery is distinct. Skin tones are natural. Shadowy events are common, and blacks remain appreciable, with a slightly milkier quality. Highlights are tasteful. Compression issues are periodic, creating some mild banding. Encoding also takes a bit of a hit, as blockier "grain" is present.

The 5.1 DTS-HD MA sound mix handles dialogue exchanges with authority, offering sharp performance choices and balanced moods of panic and softer emotion. Scoring supports with crisp instrumentation, and soundtrack additions provide fullness, with clear vocals. The track explores the soundstage, following character and vehicle movement with panning effects, and some separation events are also present. Surrounds handle musical moods and atmospherics, getting into environmental changes and weather events. Sound effects, with their fleshy, squishy noises, are distinct. Low-end isn't very challenged, but heavier beats and elements of violence contribute some activity.

Together 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

A "thirst" comes for Tim and Millie, though graphic interactions are mostly reserved for the second half of the movie, including a lustful encounter inside a bathroom stall that really sells the sticky situation between the partners best. Madness comes for the characters, and while CGI isn't the greatest, an understanding of fleshy entanglements is appreciable, creating a few grisly highlights. Shanks does well with the unknown, but he's not exiting "Together" without an explanation of the cave and its history, which is disappointing. The script grows conventional as it searches for a way out, leading to a disappointing finale, but emotional texture remains in the feature, exploring the habits of relationships and their sometimes all-consuming ways. "Together" has a bit more to share about the marathon of commitment and the power of unintended neglect, bringing food for thought while Shanks attempts to make a visceral viewing experience, putting Tim and Millie to the ultimate test of trust.
