Paramount has released the epic 1997 masterpiece 'Titanic,' directed by James Cameron and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, to the
UHD format. New specifications include 2160p/Dolby Vision video and Dolby Atmos audio. A new retrospective documentary is also included, but a few
extras from the original 2012 Blu-ray are absent. Nevertheless, this is a comprehensive collection
of extras paired with pristine video audio.
This is a special edition of the release and costs significantly more than the standard packaging wide release. Included are a number of paper bonuses inside premium
packaging. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for full coverage of what's included, and be sure to peruse the packaging
photos as well.'

This special edition UHD release of Titanic measures just about a foot long, 8.5" high, and just a shade under an inch deep. The set ships
inside
a dark plastic slipcover with the film's title and Cameron's, DiCaprio's, and Winslet's name on the front, in gold. A typical glue-on sheet is affixed to
the
back with a billing block, special features listings, a plot synopsis, photos of what is included, and more. Slipping that off reveals a slip box that is
smooth to the touch and features a beautifully airy and dreamy photo of Rose and Jack embracing in one of the most iconic advertising images for
the
film. There is also a white spine with the film's title in blue (along with "25th anniversary text) with a Paramount logo at the top and a UHD logo on
the
bottom.
Within that slip box are two items. The highlight is a beautiful coffee table book that is white with a hardback cover. The film's title (and "25th
anniversary") text appear top center in gold. A profile blueprint view of the ship also appears along the front. The rear only includes a billing block.
The
spine is blank. Inside, the two discs are held on the back inside built-in sleeves, again against ship blueprints. The same blueprints are on the front
interior. Within the book are full color pages that include full page still photos from the set; small images of the script, production design imagery, and
additional still photos; and various quotes that are all often tied to a particular part of the ship or film.
Also inside is a White Star Line folder that contains a handful of paper goods including reproductions of hand-written notes from the film, sheet music
for
"My Heart Will Go On," a full-page blueprint of the ship that shows where key moments in the film take place, a third-class ticket, a first-class dinner
menu, a second-class dinner menu, and a third-class breakfast menu. All of this would be great for framing should the fan be so inclined, obviously
(probably) making a collage of the smaller content.

Of course the movie is one of the best ever made and the UHD is likewise stellar, but the question is whether Titanic's pricey UHD premium release is worth, at time of writing, about 4.5x the cost of the standard release. The answer is a resounding no. At double, yes; at triple, probably; but more than that is pushing it for what is included. Make no mistake: the coffee table book is terrific and the little odds and ends inside are fun to flip through, but 4.5x the price is pretty steep. Maybe of the set came with a small model of the ship or something, that would have justified the price. Therefore, it is recommended for the hardest of the hardcore fans of the film and serious home video collectors only.
