Throat...12 Years After Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf August 12, 2017

“Throat…12 Years After” is careful to note that it’s not a sequel to “Deep Throat,” but a semi-similar exploration of inhibition from directed Gerard Damiano, who clearly wants to capitalize on his earlier fame, but doesn’t want to risk the legal woes.

“Throat” doesn’t provide a defined narrative, remaining with vignettes concerning the unsatisfying or uncomfortable sex lives of New Yorkers. Stars Michelle Maren, Joey Silvera, Eric Edwards, George Payne, Sharon Mitchell, Jerry Butler, and Sharon Kane offer surprisingly vivid performances to help Damiano achieve a sense of psychological invasion, with couplings often accompanied by sensual storytelling, creating layers of sexual intensity that’s quite effective. It’s not a dark endeavor, but “Throat” touches on a few intimacy issues as it goes about the business of graphic copulation, giving the picture an ever so slight sense of the real before it plunges into fantasy.

A 2K scan from the original camera negative, "Throat" is terrific with detail, giving the AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation some vivid encounters to study. Clarity is strong with sexual encounters, displaying all the essentials of bedroom encounters, often quite graphically. Colors are tastefully refreshed, with bright primaries emerging from period costuming and set decoration, and more seductive hues are equally secure. Skintones are natural. Delineation is strong, never veering into solidification. Grain is filmic. Source is in good shape, without overt points of damage.

Age is more apparent on the 1.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix, which provides a crispier appreciation for dialogue exchanges. Intelligibility isn't an issue, with everything communicated as intended, just with sharper highs. Soundtrack selections are appealing, with passable instrumentation, setting the mood. Swells of pleasure and group activity are managed comfortably.

  • Interview (31:48, HD) with actress Michelle Maren is a fairly extensive look at her personal journey through the sex industry in general. Maren tracks her development from an abused child to a brief porn star, quitting the business before "Throat" debuted. Maren is a highly theatrical interviewee, and her projection and emphasis takes some getting used to, but she offers thoughts on Damiano and her co-stars, and eventually works her way to a plug for her recent documentary, "An Autobiography of Michelle Marin."
  • Interview (20:15, HD) with cinematographer Larry Revene discusses his time working with Damiano, putting "Throat" together with the resources immediately available to them. Revene discusses production challenges, and shares memories of the industry, highlighting on-set behaviors and other movies he's worked on.
  • Audio Interview (83:43) is a conversation with star Sharon Kane.
  • And a Theatrical Trailer (3:26, HD) is included.

Throat...12 Years After Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Kinks are accounted for here, with the climax taking place in a sex club weirdly called The Sewer, providing Damiano a chance to showcase his love of the extreme in a tightly packed space full of naked, carefully taped people. "Throat" isn't cohesive, but it's interesting and competently performed, juggling adult film moods, visuals, and personalities, seemingly relieved it doesn't have to deal with a plot.
