In just a couple more days, Oscar handicappers will know if their predictions came true, and those nominated for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri will know either the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat. One way or the other, the film is probably securely situated as one of the most distinctive releases of 2017.
Screenshots are sourced from a 1080p Blu-ray.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is presented on 4K UHD courtesy of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment with a 2160p transfer in
2.39:1. This new 4K rendering offers the same kind of noticeable if subtle uptick in detail and fine detail levels that are regularly seen in digitally
captured offerings finished at 2K DIs. There are some interesting if again perhaps trifling upticks in precision in little elements like the pegboard walls
in Red's office, or even some of the crags on Mildred's weathered face. HDR adds a kind of yellowish tint to some of the scenes of the countryside,
especially with regard to the foliage, and it's really interesting to see a somewhat more orange cast to the big billboards Mildred erects. While there's a
minor uptick in shadow definition is some of the darker scenes, notably some in cars or a couple that take place in a bar, there are still some (again,
minor) issues with crush in scenes like the brief one with the minister, whose black vestments pretty much disappear into the surrounding dimness.
The only passing issue I noticed with this presentation is somewhat noisy looking mist, something that's especially noticeable in the opening
establishing shots.
The 4K UHD disc features the same DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track assessed in our Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Blu-ray review.
Note: Audio and subtitle specs above are for the 4K UHD disc. For specs on the 1080p Blu-ray also included in this package, please refer to
the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Blu-ray review.
Unfortunately, Fox has not included any of the supplements included on the 1080p Blu-ray disc for the 4K UHD version. The 1080p Blu-ray disc included in this package of course includes all of the supplements detailed in our Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Blu-ray review.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has the courage to try to be something different, an ambition I heartily applaud even if I personally found some of the plot mechanics overly contrived and at least a few elements severely lacking in logic. This is a fantastic showcase for McDormand, Harrelson and Rockwell, and this 4K UHD version offers some interesting tweaks to the palette while providing noticeable if subtle upticks in detail levels. Highly recommended.
