The Tragedy of Man is a remarkable Hungarian animated feature-film. Adapted from the play "Az ember tragédiája" by Imre Madách, The Tragedy of Man is produced by Károlyné Koncz and Borbála Mezei. Executive produced by Edit Kõ, The Tragedy of Man was a laborious production – a film that was 23 years in the making. The epic production may have taken decades to complete but it presents a wide canvas of animation and experimental art styles.

A sprawling and expansive animated film that begins with the exploration of Adam and Eve while the pair go on a mission throughout history while attempting to learn more about what it means to feel human. The characters must discover for themselves – is there more to human kind or are we all scrolling through life one moment at a time? The Tragedy of Man explores demons, cave warriors, knights, pharaohs, and more – the passage of time conveyed in a dreamlike state of wonder as the film unfolds like a fantasy dream.

Edited by Gyöngyi Féjja, Márta Fényi, Magda Hap, Iván Talpas, and Zsuzsa Tóth, The Tragedy of Man is such a sprawling and complex animated work. The animated feature comprises stories against many different timelines and eras. The editing oversight delves into the myriad of worlds and segments – showcasing a wide range of storytelling. On the whole, the editing is well- paced and effective throughout each segment of the feature.

Composed by László Sáry (Shadow on the Snow, Song of the Sand), The Tragedy of Man is a well-done score. The score is remarkably effective and beautiful throughout. The music plays such a vital role in the production. The score adds a sense of beauty and wonderment to the filmmaking. The epic vistas well highlighted by the music, too.

The cinematography by Zoltán Bacsó (The Time Masters, Suli-buli) is one of the key elements of feature-film. Bacsó is a talented cinematographer. The visual style is perfect for the experimental filmmaking. Exceptional throughout the production.

The animation is top-notch and beautiful throughout the feature-film. The animation is exceptionally rewarding and immersive looking. The animation team brought together something special with the production of The Tragedy of Man. The Tragedy of Man is a perfect showcase for the efforts of the animators. n

Written and directed by Marcell Jankovics (Son of the White Mare, Hungarian Folk Tales), The Tragedy of Man is a compelling and complex animated feature-film. The Tragedy of Man is enormously ambitious filmmaking and the production dives into the world of its visuals with plenty of creativity and style. An effective tale with a rare kind of storytelling – chapters and segments exploring different facets of the story. Jankovics made some of the most acclaimed animated films decades prior to The Tragedy of Man and one can see why the latest effort took decades more to assemble the one film. The sense of scope and scale couldn’t arrive overnight – it took decades of passionate filmmaking by Jankovics.

Released on Blu-ray by Deaf Crocodile, The Tragedy of Man is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. The high-definition video looks crisp and clear on the release. The animation is beautiful and well- reproduced. The colors pop and are wonderfully robust looking. The transfer capably highlights line artwork and background animation. Impressive aesthetically. A stunning transfer.

The release is presented in Hungarian DTS-HD Master Audio Stereo (with English subtitles). The lossless audio encoding is crisp and clear on the release. The subtitles are well-done and are free from any egregious spelling errors.

The lossless audio is one of the best qualities of the release. The lossless encoding is well-done and adds to the presentation quality by providing true theater quality sound. Physical media benefits a great deal from providing lossless quality as a significant feature (with streaming video services only available with lossy audio).

Over twenty years in the making, the acclaimed animated film is a compelling work from filmmaker Marcell Jankovics (Son of the White Mare). Deaf Crocodile provides an excellent high-definition presentation, lossless audio, and a wide assortment of bonus features. Recommended.
