The Town 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Randy Miller III August 7, 2020

Almost four years after the film's standard 4K edition, Warner Bros. has released a new Collector's Edition 4K Steelbook of Ben Affleck's The Town exclusive to Best Buy, both in-store and online. All on-disc content is identical to that earlier release, which includes the theatrical cut in 4K and an extended version of the film on a separate Blu-ray.

For a synopsis of the film, as well as a breakdown of the different cuts, please refer to Michael Reuben's review of the standard 4K edition (linked above) and Kenneth Brown's 2010 review of the Ultimate Collector's Edition.

The Town 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

  • Exclusive Steelbook Packaging - This handsome two-disc set arrives in a beautiful Steelbook case with a matte finish that resists fingerprints and smudges. The cover artwork is very stylish and based on an earlier poster design that features Ben Affleck's character Doug MacRay in profile and the supporting characters lower in a staggered group pose. Its back cover features Doug and Jem in police uniforms as seen in the film's climax, while the dynamic interior splash image depicts a shootout between the habit- wearing bank robbers and a SWAT team, slightly blurred and stylized. This Steelbook's overall color scheme is almost entirely monochromatic -- very close to true black-and-white, with a slight bit of sepia added to the lighter tones and a striking muted red for the title font. It's a great overall package design that fits the film's atmosphere very well.

As mentioned earlier, all on-disc extras are identical to those found on the standard 4K edition.

The Town 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Though it owes a lot to Heat and several other crime thrillers, Ben Affleck's The Town is an absorbing and well-made film featuring great performances and explosive action sequences. It's been made available on home video many times since 2010 (including a well-regarded 4K edition back in 2016), but Best Buy's belated Collector's Edition 4K Steelbook offers a nice packaging upgrade that looks great in person. While the asking price is high for a catalog release, it's still recommended for die-hard and those who have not purchased the film on 4K yet.
