The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman July 1, 2019

MPI and Dark Sky have released Director Tobe Hooper's seminal 1974 Horror film 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' to Blu-ray in collectible SteelBook packaging. This one-disc release is identical to the first disc in the 2014 DigiPak. This release ditches that set's second disc, which contained numerous video-based supplements (the disc included herein does include all four commentary tracks). See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

The SteelBook's front cover design is a bit interesting. For such a dark, hopeless, and gritty movie, the SteelBook is fairly light in color, with a slightly off-white backdrop framing a somewhat darker map of Texas. A Rex Reed quote appears top-left in black letters. The film's title appears in large red block letters bottom left. Much of the right-middle portion features Leatherface, in a bloody red color, raising his chainsaw above his head, looking down on a bloodied and terrified Sally, who stands before a pile of skulls. Small thumbnail images of the farm house and additional characters appear extreme bottom-right. The rear side carries over the creamy off-white color which is cut in half by an interesting image in the shape of a chainsaw blade. The bottom features the saw's teeth while the top is flat and depicts a distance scene of the farm house with a rising or setting sun peeking just above the horizon. "SteelBook" lettering and the SteelBook website appear at the bottom in black lettering. The front and rear panels are smooth and glossy but do not show an excess of fingerprints. The spine holds the same creamy color with the film's title in red color, center. A Dark Sky Films logo appears at the top and Blu-ray logo and model number appear at the bottom.

Inside, the single disc is situated on the right-hand side. There is no digital copy. The inner print is a flat dark gray/black color with no artwork.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a seminal Horror film that is a necessary addition to any serious film library. The SteelBook is a good choice, even if the design is not entirely reflective of the movie's gritty, gruesome tone. The lack of a digital code, inner print artwork, and especially the absence of an existing second disc of bonus features make it difficult to recommend this particular version when a superior releases exist.
