Richard Rich's animated family film The Swan Princess reached the quarter-century milestone back in 2019, which honestly feels like a lifetime ago, and Sony rightfully celebrated by treating nostalgic fans to a solidly appointed 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray that earned high marks in our linked review. Seven years later they've returned with a like-minded UHD edition, one that's not advertised as being sourced from a new master but indeed enjoys the benefits of true 4K resolution as well as HDR10/Dolby Vision support to tighten its dark and colorful palette. Still, there's no new Atmos mix here and all of the 25th anniversary disc's legacy bonus features are returning... so for the most part, the improvements aren't as massive as other Blu-ray-to-4K upgrades from the studio.

Before watching this UHD release, I only had vague memories of The Swan Princess' existence -- yours truly was a cynical 15 year-old back in 1994 so this G-rated family film wasn't really on my radar, and the film's disappointing box-office return suggests that it wasn't widely received in most regions either. Nonetheless, The Swan Princess has built a growing cult following in the years and decades since then, and "cult" might not even be the right word since no less than nine direct-to-video sequels have been released since then. While the slightly warmer 4/5 rating Marty gave The Swan Princess in his linked Blu-ray review (which also includes a plot synopsis) means that I wasn't quite as enamored with the film, I can still appreciate its old-school charm, hand-drawn animation, and solid voice acting. Simply put, The Swan Princess deserved a wider audience than it got back in 1994 but, with continued home video support like this, future generations (and their children) will be able to enjoy it for many more decades to come.

The general appearance of Sony's 2160p/HDR10/Dolby Vision transfer of The Swan Princess suggests that it uses the same master as their 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray, but that's not a bad thing. Given the studio's track record, that previous master likely stemmed from a 4K scan of original elements and was simply downscaled, whereas this UHD disc gets the full-res version with the added benefit of HDR. As such, many of Marty's sentiments from his linked review can also be applied this time around: The Swan Princess looks great with a nicely organic appearance and visible film grain throughout, and only occasional baked-in softness can be seen during a handful of scenes and shots. I didn't notice the stray damage-related blemishes that Marty noted in his review, so perhaps a little more cleanup work was performed here... but even if it wasn't, there's an awful lot to like about this 4K transfer and long-time fans of The Swan Princess will certainly enjoy seeing in its best home video presentation to date. The HDR layer adds a bit more support for color nuance as well as contrast, likewise boosting more prominent special effects (the ethereal glow of its title character's transformation, other magic, sparkling jewelry, etc.) but aiming for "supportive" rather than "showy". Disc encoding is solid as well, with no signs of filtering and a higher-than-average bit rate at the most crucial moments.

Although I'm a little disappointed that no Dolby Atmos remix was attempted just for fun, it's pretty tough to complain since both the 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray's DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio and 7.1 remixes are included here and they sound similarly great within format boundaries. I'm not sure if The Swan Princess' sonic roots are indeed Dolby Stereo as listed on the not-always-reliable IMDb but, if that's the case, I'd have loved to have that option as well. Either way, Marty awarded the Blu-ray's matching mixes a full 5/5 so I might as well too.

This one-disc release ships in a keepcase with attractive poster-themed cover artwork that looks a lot more appealing than previous versions with their candy-colored palettes and character-heavy collages. The Swan Princess 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Richard Rich's The Swan Princess performed poorly at the box office back in 1994 (which may very well have been due to Disney "conveniently" re-releasing their massive hit The Lion King in theaters around that same time), but it's grown in stature since then and has spawned no less than nine direct-to-video sequences too. While it didn't exactly blow me away during my first viewing on Sony's new UHD edition, it's nonetheless a decent old-school family film with loads of hand-drawn charm... even if it's obviously aiming to mimic that ubiquitous Disney style at almost every turn. Even so, fans will surely enjoy revisiting this one and Sony's 4K transfer offers a nice visual upgrade, with almost every other facet of this release (audio, extras) being more or less identical to their 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray.
