The Super Mario Galaxy Movie 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

The highest grossing film of 2026 (to date), earning just over $1 billion in global box office receipts, and the sequel to 2023's 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie', 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' arrives on 4K UHD disc in this Walmart Exclusive Limited Edition Gift Set courtesy of Universal. The primary draw of the set is the unique collectible "Tin Egg" packaging for the film. The second installment of the franchise sees a return of all critical cast members including Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad). The release features a stunning 2160p presentation with Dolby Vision, along with a stellar Dolby Atmos audio track. While a commentary track is not included here, there are approximately an hour's worth of on-disc supplemental materials that shed some light on numerous aspects of the film's creation. A foil-enhanced and embossed slipcover, a Blu-ray disc, and a Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere are also included. Once again, Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) and Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day) are off an adventure, this time one that spans locations across the galaxy. When Rosalina is abducted (along with the adorable Yellow Luma), Princess Peach and Toad hastily set off on a rescue mission. Along with a new friend, the brothers put helping to reform a miniaturized Bowser on hold and set off after her, facing dangers of their own. Once they join forces, will the assistance of their new allies tip the scales in their favor? Is Bowser as rehabilitated as he seems? And how much mayhem can one little monkey cause?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

The overall packaging for the new The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Walmart Exclusive Limited Edition Gift Set 4K is larger than I expected, measuring approximately 12" x 9" x 2 .5". I also wasn't expecting the box to have a giant J-card, that when removed allows purchasers to see not only the full front image, but the massive image on the back of Rosalina's Comet Observatory. Both the front and back images are bathed in the luscious blues, pinks, and purples that characterize the film's outer space scenes. Opening box the allows for the removal of a two compartment cardboard insert. Opening the left side of the insert provides access to the tin egg. Under it, is a thin sheet of black foam padding. Please note: the Digital Code is found under that thin piece of foam. The tin egg, shaped and painted to resemble one of Yoshi's eggs, measures approximately 8.25" long, 7" wide, and about 1.75" in depth. It's the beneficiary of a glossy finish that helps the colors pop. Given that the bulk of the surface is white, I'm not overly worried about fingerprints from normal handling. The back of the egg is flat, and contains the name of the film in the customary font and colors, along with the logos of the companies involved and the typical copyright information.

Removing the cover reveals the discs and their simple but effective storage solution. The underside of the lid features molded black plastic that helps it hold the discs in place. the discs themselves rest in the bottom of the egg, stacked loosely on a black plastic spindle. Three black foam spacers protect the discs from making contact with anything they shouldn't - one is between the Blu-ray disc and the bottom of the case, one is between the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray disc, and one is between the 4K UHD disc and the lid. Please refer to the pictures I took to provide a visual reference for this clever packaging idea.

The easel which holds the egg is found in the rightmost compartment of the packaging. Assembly is rather obvious as the tab on the bottom of the stand fits neatly into the slot in the middle of the base. Four magnets hold the tin egg in place as it rests on the stand's lip. When on the when on the easel, the entire display stands approximately 10" tall. It's quite whimsical and more than appropriate packaging for the film, given Yoshi's on-screen antics. It's virtually a "must-purchase" for those who caught the film in theaters and happened to grab an adorable Yoshi popcorn bucket

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

I found the second visit to the Mario cinematic universe to be much more enjoyable than the first, due in large part to the grander scale of the film in terms of locations, the number of characters, and the larger threat our heroes face. While knowledge of the Mario games and the broader output of Nintendo as a whole are not necessary, they do provide the viewer with an entirely different level of enjoyment and appreciation of the film as they are able to pick up on a great many references and allusions which would otherwise go unnoticed or would possess a slightly diminished impact. The returning voice cast has certainly settled into their roles, with the newcomers being welcome additions. Viewers will also want to watch the end credits for not just one, but two post-credits sequences, one of which most certainly hints at what's to come next. With its stellar audio and video presentations, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Walmart Exclusive Limited Edition Gift Set 4K comes very highly recommended to those looking for some truly distinctive and original packaging for the film that will fit in quite nicely on a shelf with other Mario-related collectables.
