The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is an outstanding adaptation of the beloved video game series from Nintendo. Produced by Christopher Meledandri (Despicable Me, Sing) and Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario Kart World, Super Mario Odyssey), The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the first CG animated Mario Bros. feature-film. Featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, and Seth Rogen.

Mario (Chris Pratt) is on a huge adventure – one of the biggest missions ever to date for the plumber and work for hire. Mario and brother Luigi (Charlie Day) are teleported away to the epic Mushroom Kingdom. Mario must stop the diabolical villain Bowser (Jack Black) and help protect his beloved brother, Luigi. Mario teams up with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) to fight the epic fight against Bowser. Can Mario save the day and be the epic hero of his own story?

The voice performances are excellent and play a big role the production. Chris Pratt is excellent as Mario and delivers one of his best performances as a voice-actor. Pratt was surprisingly excellent in the role and managed to do a terrific job. Charlie Day does a solid job as brother Luigi, too. Jack Black is both humorous and charming as the dastardly villain Bowser. Anya Taylor-Joy is perfect as Princess Peach. Seth Rogen has some fun with his supporting role as Donkey Kong. The actors bring a lot of fun to the characters.

The production features a lot of wonderful design elements throughout. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D features top-notch production designs by Guillaume Aretos (Shrek 2, Puss in Boots). The animated film is also engaging with excellent art direction by Matthieu Gosselin (Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Secret Life of Pets 2). The team of animators brought something special to the table. The entire film manages to feel true to the video game series. The animation is faithful to the style of modern Mario games while also creating some whimsical visual throwbacks to the earlier Nintendo games, too. The CG animation feels right at home and works wonders for the production.

Composed by Koji Kondo (Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World) and Brian Tyler (Transformers One, Scream VI), The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D features excellent music for the animated feature. Engaging, exciting, and action-packed, the score is a fun backdrop to the adventure. The music has wonderful charm and the spectacle of the film is enhanced a lot by the score.

Edited by Eric Osmond (Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins), The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is well paced throughout. The editing is concise and the action scenes are well established. The editing certainly impresses in spades. The pace of the film is consistently fun and engaging.

Written by Matthew Fogel (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is a solid script. The screenplay pays tribute to the video games and paves an engaging story for the animated universe. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D has reasonably solid dialogue, fun characterizations, and engaging storytelling. A fun script for Nintendo and Mario enthusiasts.

Directed by Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, Teen Titans Go!), Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go! ), Fabien Polack (Yellow is the New Black), and Pierre Leduc, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is a solid and engaging animated epic. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is a fun adaptation of the video game. The filmmaking team manages to create an engaging blockbuster with plenty of callbacks for Nintendo fans. The action scenes are especially engaging and the filmmakers manage to showcase excellent staging for these action sequences – every character finding moments to impress in the feature. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is a gem.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Released on 3D Blu-ray by Turbine Media, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded high- definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen. The CG animation looks stunning on the release. Colors pop with wonderful vibrancy and depth. The presentation provides excellent clarity for the animation – with everything from background animation to line artwork.

The 3D is phenomenal. The 3D presentation has excellent depth and detail throughout. The 3D video adds great layering to the presentation and it makes the experience all the more entertaining and immersive. The 3D presentation doesn't have many pop out effects and some may find this aspect a little bit disappointing. However, strictly from a depth perspective, the 3D looks excellent on the release. Turbine Media has done a great job with the transfer and it retains a faithful presentation to the original theatrical 3D release.

Physical media provides additional benefits over streaming. The video bit-rates are higher compared to streaming services. Streaming sometimes has more outside variances in video presentation quality based on a myriad of factors –streaming service plan tiers, data speeds, data caps, location, number of connected users, weather issues, and other unforeseen issues. Streaming isn't always consistent and physical media provides a consistently pleasing experience with high quality video for enthusiasts.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The release is presented in Dolby Atmos surround sound. The Atmos audio presentation is engaging and energetic throughout the feature. The atmospheric audio is dynamic and exciting – adding a lot to the presentation. The score is well integrated into the soundstage. The sound effects are creative fun and bring a lot of magic to the audio.

One of the great qualities of the release is the lossless encoding. Lossless audio provides theater quality sound. Having theater quality sound at home with nice A/V gear, speakers, and equipment is a joy and adds a lot to the experience. Streaming services offering Atmos audio only provide CD quality audio. Comparatively, the Atmos experience on disc offers significantly higher bit-rates, lossless, and the deeper noise floor and clarity of 24-bit depth audio. Audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts vastly prefer the lossless experience.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

The 3D release includes no on-disc supplements. Turbine Media provides no on-disc bonus features for the 3D Blu-ray release. Turbine Media decided to provide optimal video and audio quality for the 3D presentation.

The logic of not including the assembly of bonus features is that fans may already own separately available Blu-ray/4K editions featuring accompanying bonus features – or that fans can simply pick up these other available editions (sold separately). Although it would be nice to see some bonus features included on the release, fans can consider picking up those additional The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases for the extra content (via Blu-ray, 4K, limited edition, and/or steelbook).

On a more positive note, the physical release comes packaged in a clear Criterion-style case and features reversible cover art. One cover-art side features English-friendly front cover art and spine artwork (something making the release more friendly to import customers and collectors).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is enormous fun and a must-see for Mario fans. The Nintendo video game franchise has been given a new animated adaptation and it feels true to the video games. The animation is fantastic and the vibrant colors of the film are outstanding. The voice- work is great, too. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D can't hold a candle for me compared to the live-action film made in 1993 (even though Super Mario Bros. was less faithful to the video games), The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3D is undeniable fun and is a more faithful adaptation of the Nintendo game series.

The 3D Blu-ray release features top-notch video and lossless audio. The 3D presentation provides great 3D depth and visuals (with plenty of fun pop out effects). A must-own release for 3D enthusiasts and Mario fans. The release comes packaged in a beautiful clear case with reversible cover-art (one side featuring an English-friendly front-cover and spine art). Highly recommended.
