The Suicide Squad 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

An entertaining comic-book gem.

The Suicide Squad is one of the most original comic-book films. Written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), The Suicide Squad is that rare auteur comic-book gem with plenty of style. A must-see motion-picture event blazes across-the-screen.

Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) puts together Task Force X (otherwise known as the Suicide Squad). Bringing together an elite team of dangerous criminals serving time in prison at the Belle Reve, reduced sentences are promised in exchange for fighting for the government as part of a team. Adventure awaits.

Embarking on a top secret mission at Corto Maltese, the squad must annihilate a Nazi-era lab with a secret experiment known as Project Starfish. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) team up to bring down the other “baddies” (on the other side of the spectrum). Can these villainous heroes help save the world?

The performances in The Suicide Squad are excellent from the core cast. Margot Robbie is the star performer: her unique brand of maniacal badassery is one of the key reasons to even see the film. Stunningly beautiful and a brilliant actress, Robbie steals the entire show. Idris Elba and John Cena provide the supporting roles that stand out the most: providing The Suicide Squad some extra edge and comedy.

The production design by Beth Mickle (Drive, Focus) is first-rate and provides The Suicide Squad with plenty of Hollywood spectacle. One of the coolest things about The Suicide Squad is how it uses so many unique sets and set-pieces. Though the film still uses CGI, a great percentage of the film has traditional effects work and the production design elements give the filmmaking a more epic scope.

A beautiful collectors edition.

The music composed by John Murphy (Sunshine, Kick-Ass) is enormously entertaining. The music providing a sense of whimsy and energy throughout the action-packed thrill-ride. There are many exciting sequences which are further heightened by Murphy's score. A knockout success.

The cinematography by Henry Braham (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Legend of Tarzan) is stunning. The visual component of The Suicide Squad is first-rate. The use of color is superb and hypnotic. There are many sequences which have the perfect balance between light and dark: the filmmaking enhanced by the unique magic of the cinematography.

The costumes by Judianna Makovsky (Avengers: Endgame, The Hunger Games) were stunning. Robbie's gorgeous costumes help showcase her beauty and grace. Each character has a unique, distinctive, and compelling costume. Makovsky did excellent work on The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn fires on all cylinders with The Suicide Squad. Gunn is one of the best filmmakers working in the motion-picture industry today. A gifted artist, Gunn imbues his films with a sense of originality missing from many big-budget blockbusters. There is a dedication to the craft of filmmaking that is unmistakably authentic. Few filmmakers could have made a comic-book film with such inventive spectacle: the action extraordinary.

The Suicide Squad 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras 

The collectors edition steelbook features a stunning design. The release is a beautiful edition in a nice case. The steelbook art reminds one of a Mondo art print and the use of color on the design adds a nice embellishment. The steelbook has a quality gloss finish and is far superior to standard matte-finish steelbooks.

The Suicide Squad is a work of art. The filmmaking is original and authentic. James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) is one of the best filmmakers working in Hollywood. Margot Robbie is a goddess as Harley Quinn (one of the best comic-book characters). The 4K UHD features a stunning video-audio presentation. The collectors edition steelbook is a nice edition for fans of the film and is well worth a pick-up. Highly recommended.
