“The Return of the Street Fighter” pushed the titular character into a super-spy direction, giving him a suave presence to best boost the sequel’s appeal to audience and play into the trends of the day, with Roger Moore’s take on James Bond reaching audiences around the globe. In 1974’s “The Street Fighter’s Last Revenge,” the producers give star Sonny Chiba a chance to fully graduate to a 007-type, finding a once feral character transformed into man of style and action, with a few tricks up his sleeve. “The Street Fighter’s Last Revenge” seems miles away from the original picture, as the final film in the trilogy offers an increase in production polish and fantasy, losing much of the edge that fueled the first two chapters.
While the U.S. Cut has been newly scanned for the AVC encoded image (2.35:1 aspect ratio) presentation, the Japanese Cut is pieced together using upscaled SD footage, with four minutes added to the run time. These additions are noticeable but certainly not deal-breakers. The rest of the viewing experience remains enjoyable, with vivid primaries on costuming and interior decoration. Locations enjoy bright greenery. Skintones are natural. Detail is strong, with clear views of weaponry and interior expanse. Clothing remains fibrous. Facial surfaces are textured. Delineation isn't problematic, securing darker fabrics and evening action. Source is in decent shape, without pronounced elements of damage.
The 2.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix supplies a strong understanding of dubbing achievements, with Terry's voice giving off a distinct Lee Van Cleef tone. Dialogue exchanges are clear, without disruption or fluctuation. Scoring is also defined, handling changes in mood with decent instrumentation. Sound effects are satisfactory, preserving body blows and gun fire, and atmospherics get a boost here, with rain and assorted aquatic interactions finding position.
"The Street Fighter's Last Revenge" is the least effective of the series, mostly because it removes some of the grim violence that defined the first two installments. There's plenty to enjoy here, especially Chiba, who's enjoying his time as a sleek man of war, newly interested in seducing others instead of simply tearing them into pieces.
