The Seven Deadly Sins: Season One Blu-ray Movie Review

An action-fantasy anime adventure.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard June 20, 2022

The Seven Deadly Sins is an action-packed anime. The anime is based on the manga from original creator Nakaba Suzuki. The series feature animation produced by by A-1 Pictures (Birdy the Mighty: Decode, Black Butler). The animated production is streaming on Netflix. Produced by Kensuke Tateishi, Kozue Kananiwa, Kyōko Uryū, Ryu Hashimoto, Takamitsu Inoue, and Tetsuya Endo, The Seven Deadly Sins is a unique spin on the action genre. Season 1 explores the origins of the anime.

The world has turned upside down and the best way to live is to live with sin. In a glorious kingdom with plenty of corrupt knights, an exciting action-adventure starts to unfold. Princess Elizabeth (Sora Amamiya) finds herself experiencing new ventures when both her father and her sisters are arrested. Determined to help her family from the evil of these corrupt knights, Elizabeth seeks the aid of the Seven Deadly Sins: truly remarkable warriors with skills that she calls upon to help with her quest. The sins were once the cherished leaders of the town but became fugitives from the law during a time of peril – and the legendary sins became betrayers of the kingdom.

Yet Elizabeth beckons their call to duty and a glourious adventure awaits. Sin awaits in spades. Finding solace and aid in the help of a perverted young man and his pig companion, Meliodas (Yuuki Kaji), dragon of wrath, himself a powerful sinner – helps with the epic journey. Along the way, Elizabeth, Meliodas, and the pink piggy are on a new mission with danger along the way. Can the Seven Deadly Sins unite and save the day?

The series excels with excellent animation. The art work is one of the strengths of the production. The art direction by Hiromichi Itou (Sakura Wars the Animation, Strike Witches: Road to Berlin) is one of the production’s strongest strengths. The animation looks bold and colorful. There is a clear attention given to the art style by the team of animators involved in the production. The behind- the-scenes work helps the anime have a distinct style.

The origin of the Netflix anime.

The character designs by Keigo Sasaki (Blue Exorcist, Night Raid 1931) are impressive and fit the central protagonists of the series. The central leads are each unique in their aesthetic and the design efforts certainly suit the production. There is a sense of great consideration being given by Sasaki to these designs.

The cinematography by Shunya Kimura (Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Eureka Seven AO) is wonderfully evocative and engaging. The use of colorful animation to highlight the visual style is certainly central to the effectiveness of the cinematography. The effort helps the story unfold. Cinematographic details showcase the landscape of the characters in an ambitious style.

The score composed by Hiroyuki Sawano (Kill la Kill, Attack on Titan) and Takafumi Wada (High School of the Dead, Seraph of the End: Battle in Nagoya) fits the tone of the production. The music works as the background score. The score highlights the action and fits the material. The high octane components highlighted on the production are well suited to the energetic music.

Written by Shōtarō Suga (Darker than Black, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), The Seven Deadly Sins is a series which has fun exploring the concept. The ideas engaged in the storyline are compelling: there’s something interesting about the concept. While the series isn’t the best written anime around, there’s enough charm and wit the characters (and exploration with the core ideas) to make it worth checking out.

Directed by Tensai Okamura (Wolf’s Rain, Medabots), The Seven Deadly Sins is an anime with plenty of robust action-packed fun. Anime fans who enjoy a adventure series with a unique concept and cast of characters will appreciate the vision of director Okamura. The series works well with some bold ideas.

Arriving on Blu-ray from Funimation Entertainment, The Seven Deadly Sins is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. A beautifully animated production, the Blu-ray release has a worthwhile video presentation which does well enough showcasing the animated background animation and colorful details. The encode does effectively handle the action scenes. There are some scenes with slight banding but otherwise an impressive encoding.

The release includes a selection of audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound and the original Japanese language audio track in Dolby TrueHD 2.0 stereo (with English subtitles). The audio will impress for both the English dub (which utilizes the sound stage more by using the surrounds) or the original language option.
